Sarah Pringle

Applied Artist

Statement/Vision — As an applied artist, I’ve always been drawn to work with materials that contribute to the sensory quality one finds in real objects, hand-worked with technical acumen. In my work I have specialized in the use of vellum/parchment, leather and gilding on furniture and architectural surfaces. This To the Trade practice has been the backbone of my work at Cinch and has allowed me to study and develop many techniques on a variety of designs, each with their own particular challenges. I am now focusing on using my artisan skills to develop my own designs and sharing these techniques through teaching and writing.

Biographical Information — Over the past 23 years I have collaborated with architects, designers, furniture makers, metalworkers, upholsterers, conservators, artists, and other individuals to create extraordinary custom work. I began my career in bookbinding, studying with Don Glaister, Timothy Ely, David Sellers, Gary Frost, Hedi Kyle, and Laura Young. I worked in the binderies of: Daniel Kelm, Sarah Creighon, David Bourbeau and the University of Washington Libraries, and designed and executed unique bindings that are currently in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Library of Congress, among others. Eventually I crossed over into the world of furniture and architectural finishes, bringing my bookbinding expertise with me. I have had the pleasure and privilege to work with a number of internationally renowned design firms such as The Office of Thierry Despont, Thomas Pheasant, William T. Georgis Architect, The Wiseman Group Interior Design Inc., and Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
