Meredith Broberg

I am a multi-disciplinary artist with a deep interest in the natural world and our connections within it. My recent work explores issues of extinction, with several series focused on animals on the brink and ecosystems at risk. My aim with these images is both to depict individual beings, and to bear witness to their pending disappearance. Much of my studio practice centers on drawing, sometimes widening to include painting, bookmaking and printmaking (thanks to our wonderful local resource: Zea Mays Printmaking Studio). In making images I prefer to combine materials and techniques that I can’t fully control, in hopes of melding intention, accident and organic process. I’m interested in influencing the outcome, rather than determining it. In Alternative Technologies, I have been developing a separate series of photo-based work to explore visual metaphors about communication & connection. In these photos, I make a temporary setup in a body of water, using the surface reflection to disrupt our familiar experience of space.
