March 2023 exhibit : Bodies of Water

March 9, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The water understands
Civilization well;
It wets my foot, but prettily,
It chills my life, but wittily,
It is not disconcerted,
It is not broken-hearted:
Well used, it decketh joy,
Adorneth, doubleth joy:
Ill used, it will destroy,
In perfect time and measure
With a face of golden pleasure
Elegantly destroy.
– “Water” by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Moonlit Sea Prints of Easthampton MA presents its latest exhibition, Bodies of Water, showcasing the works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Ohno Bakufu, Hiroshi Yoshida, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Ito Yuhan, and more.

Our featured woodblock prints highlight the many forms and functions of water. Raging waves provide an epic backdrop for scenes of myth and battle, while still pools enhance the tranquility of temples. Images of fishing boats, ferries, and rice fields celebrate the essential role of water in Japanese industry and daily life during the Edo, Meiji, and Showa periods. Come explore this multifaceted element, from the creatures stirring below the surface to the sacred bridges stretching above.

This exhibit is the first curated show through our internship by Laney Goodrich, Mt Holyoke College class of 2024.

Opening Thursday, March 9th from 5pm to 8pm.

Open Monday – Friday, 10am-2pm by appointment only.
