Zoe Sasson

My reflections about each painting submitted speak to a few themes that I have been contemplating during ``the time of covid.`` I have been thinking a lot more about the space that my body inhabits. I think this is partially due to my return to Western Mass after 12 years of living in the South. There is a return to a previous life in these works, which speaks to a yearning for something not-of-this-world.

The paintings put on different outfits and try out different personas, with the sole purpose of finding quiet, safety, and simplicity. It can be difficult to find this, as the characters depicted in the paintings look for comfort after experiencing violent, vulgar, and anxiety-inducing moments of day-to-day life.

Wait for the kill, 2020, oil paint, fabric, string, and sculptamold on canvas. This piece works hypnotically, deceptively, and even dangerously, appearing soft but sharp. Delicate yet solid. The arches depicted are sealed in paint so that they remain still. And yet, a series of objects hover close, like carnivorous plants waiting to catch their prey. | Zoe Sasson

Trailing backwards, 2020, oil paint, fabric, acrylic, and sculptamold on canvas. Something emerged and shifted in this painting that caught me by surprise. It made me terribly excited. It also left me frightened-- Of myself, of my body, and of nature. There is a comforting anchor in this painting, allowing me to sink back towards earth instead of just floating into the blue abyss above. | Zoe Sasson
