A sacrilege is a violation of something that is considered sacred. This painting depicts the stone statue Pietà by Michelangelo. It stands before images of victims of gun violence and Jesus bares names and dates of gun violence events written on his body as wounds from his scourging. A hand reaches into the scene firing a hand gun directed at the heart of mother Mary as all mothers hearts are devastated at the death of their child. The name sacrilege is not given for what has been done to the statue of Jesus but to the violence done to those God has deems as sacred. Jesus still bares the wounds and scars of our atrocities towards one another and It is by his stripes that we will be healed.
