SUMMARY:Fantasy Worlds: A Pre-Event Workshop Inspired by “Kingdom of Dust”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Easthampton Public Library for a family-friendly creative workshop to kick off the excitement for author Lisa Stringfellow’s upcoming visit. Participants will design their own fantasy worlds by transforming an orange peel into a miniature map. Copies of Kingdom of Dust will be available for families to take home as part of this pre-event celebration. \nHonored in the Mass Book Awards in the Middle Grade/YA category\, Kingdom of Dust follows Amara\, a young girl on a quest to find her land’s lost storytellers in order to save her family and society. Drawing inspiration from West African mythology\, the novel blends lush prose with accessible writing for readers of all ages. Amara’s journey—rooted in themes of climate justice\, cultural memory\, and the restoration of her people’s stories—has earned the book recognition within the growing canon of modern fantasy for children. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nLISA STRINGFELLOW is a middle-grade author and longtime educator who has taught Language Arts and technology to middle-school students for over 30 years. She writes fantasy with a dark\, folkloric twist\, inspired by her love of fairy tales. A member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America\, the Authors Guild\, and Black Creators HQ\, she is an active advocate for equity and inclusivity in children’s literature.

SUMMARY:Meat for Tea Author Reading with Andrew Varnon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special event — A Meat for Tea author reading with Andrew Varnon! Andrew will read his essay “The Other Side of the Net”. This event is drop-in.  \nIn “The Other Side of the Net\,” writer Andrew Varnon imagines playing tennis with the ghost of David Foster Wallace\, the author of the monumental novel Infinite Jest. Wallace committed suicide in 2008\, but has a devoted following of readers and fans. In his essay\, Varnon describes how he came to read Wallace’s novel Infinite Jest through his interest in tennis. The novel is partially set at the fictional Enfield Tennis Academy in Massachusetts. In the tennis community\, Wallace is also known for his essay on tennis icon Roger Federer\, “Both Flesh and Not\,” and is widely credited with the appellation for tennis as “chess on the run.” In his essay\, Varnon engages Wallace’s writing style – complete with end notes – and explores the idea of how the activity of reading and writing is\, in fact\, like playing tennis. \nWriter and teacher Andrew Varnon lives in Greenfield with his wife and family. He is the boys tennis coach at Greenfield High School and an active recreational tennis player. He is also a journalist and an award-winning poet. “The Other Side of the Net” was originally published online at The Smart Set (www.thesmartset.com/the-other-side-of-the-net/) and was republished locally in Meat for Tea. Varnon presented a portion of his essay to the David Foster Wallace Conference in Normal\, Illinois\, this June.
