SUMMARY:CATALOG - Collages - Michael Sjostedt
DESCRIPTION:November 4\, 2022 – November 30\, 2022\n \nArtist Reception: Friday November 4\, 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Part of Artwalk Easthampton \nI grew up with catalogs. Sears\, JC Penny\, Montgomery Ward. Giant bibles of cool stuff. As a kid\, I’d dive into the catalogs from cover to cover when they arrived in the mail\, closely studying the toys\, bikes\, furniture\, and the men’s clothes. \nI haven’t flipped through these “cultural artifacts” in nearly 40 years. When I did\, I got lost again. Page after page was jampacked with so much information—practical\, like over-sized pricing\, and editorial\, like the idealized man in everyday scenarios. Doing a deep dive into these vintage catalogs as an adult—and with a 21st century lens—showed me how much of a role “the tools of consumerism” informed the foundation of my identity—and how I viewed and compared myself to others. \nWhen I started the series\, I wanted to create evidence of how I consumed imagery and messages that I had a deep\, charged history with. I started from instinct\, not overthinking the process—like I did when I was “shopping”: culling\, layering\, extracting\, and incorporating other materials and techniques that connected with the experience and subject matter—sewing patterns\, pencil-drawn grids\, tape transfers. \nThe final collection illustrates how I look out to look in—and look out again. The messy visual narrative is what it felt like to catalog my experience with content focused on buying what you can be. \nMichael Sjostedt

SUMMARY:Discovering Path - Paintings by Karen Iglehart
DESCRIPTION:Discovering Path opens with Artwalk and runs through October 29. \nThe paintings in this exhibit represent a process of exploring form and seeing\nwhere it might go. I started at the beginning of Covid with two\ntriangles seeming to attempt a connection in open space \, and\neventually arrived at the more literal Path series. Where are we\ngoing? There are no markers and no end in sight. On the canvas and\nin the outer world.\nThese ideas are related to my experience in Buddhism. Everything\nwe experience is changing. Unpredictability and impermanence are\nthe norm\, from the small day to day to the much bigger picture of\nour lives.\nI love the surprises that occur when painting…just need to notice\nthem. Sometimes a brush mark disappears\, sometimes I hold onto\nit. It may stay until suddenly it doesn’t work and is painted over …\nthat is the delight of painting in oil.\nThe tension of edges is important to me. It is the point of energy\nand transformation…the working with very small\, but important\npoints of color that transform the entire painting.

SUMMARY:MY WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Pastel Paintings by Dallas Looman. \nDallas Looman was drawn to painting at a very young age\, first as a different form of communication\, one he felt more comfortable with. As an autistic child going through school\, he would draw pictures to share what had happened at school with his mom. But that way of communicating soon became an artistic passion\, drawn by the creative process and discovering his fluency with the pastel media.\n\nIn 2013\, one of his pieces was selected by “Very Special Arts\,” the international organization on arts and disability\, for an exhibition of artwork by emerging young artists with disabilities\, held at the S. Dillon Ripley Center of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington\, DC.\n\n\nMY WORLD opens Friday September 2nd with the Artist Reception\, between 5 and 8pm\, and runs until the end of September.\n\nNo appointments are necessary to visit the Elusie Gallery\nwhich is open:\n\nTuesday through Friday from 10:30 am to 5:30pm\nand Saturday from 9am to noon

SUMMARY:INSIDE OUT / Alternative Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to see that ArtWalk is back in Easthampton\, and happy to welcome you back at the Elusie Gallery!  We are also quite pleased with the timing of our first post-pandemic exhibit\, even though it was not planned. INSIDE OUT showcases the work of Kevin Scace\, an Easthampton resident\, that he created while following an Arts program while incarcerated at the Berkshires County Jail. His naive yet very detailed artistic vision of the “Outside while Inside” is poignant and thought provoking. And after the last two years when we all experienced some levels of frustrations\, restrictions\, confinement\, these illustrations should resonate with all of us. \n“….within the confines of the House of Corrections there is a small classroom with limited supplies. An art program filled with firm rules and gentle guidance to create beauty and enduring assurance to unknown freedoms…” K.S. 2022\n \nThe exhibit runs through April 28\, and is open when Big Red Frame is open. If you cannot make  Artwalk Easthampton\, please come meet the artist the following day\, Saturday April 2nd from 3 to 5pm \n

SUMMARY:Love thy Beautiful Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:February has typically been the month for lovers at the Elusie Gallery. \n\nBut this year we find it difficult to celebrate love when intolerance and discrimination seem to be the new normal\, and the basic right to love and be loved is being taken away from so many\, whether it is the mass incarceration of children at the southern border or the wave of new anti-LGBTQ legislation being passed or considered in many parts of the country.\n\nBecause we should not accept this new normal\, and because LOVE needs to be celebrated\, always\, we have invited artists to submit artwork that celebrate a more universal kind of love\, the love of our neighbors\, ALL our neighbors\, the ones across the street\, across the border or across gender identifications. Love thy Beautiful Neighbors showcases the love of our differences\, these beautiful differences that still – and always will – define and unite this country.

SUMMARY:The Lost Seclusion Drawings of Cletus van Stratten
DESCRIPTION:The Elusie Gallery is hosting (ghosting?) an exhibit of a very strange nature. Please read with caution and a sense of humor…\nBelow is the press release that Van Stratten concocted with incredible foresight more than 40 years ago…or by his alter ego Ken Gagne…? \nFor Immediate Release \n“The Lost Seclusion Drawings” by Cletus Van Stratten at The Elusie Gallery \nOctober 10 – November 5 with the opening Reception on Saturday October 12: 5-8 PM \nIn Easthampton\, Massachusetts\, the Elusie Gallery is a space that showcases “local and not-so-local talent\, established and emerging artists\, and the unexpected”. Unexpected is a good way to describe the Lost Seclusion Drawings exhibit by Cletus Van Stratten. \nRecently rediscovered by Van Stratten’s alter-ego Ken Gagne\, a fellow artist and Easthampton resident\, these large charcoal drawings were done by Van Stratten\, in 1975 in NYC. For three months Clete retreated in a dimly lit room furnished with only one chair\, ingesting varying amounts of hallucinatory drugs\, hoping to unravel the secret truths of the universe. Every week one visitor was allowed to enter the room\, serving as a model for Van Stratten’s drawings. This exhibit is the fruit of these weekly visits. Gagne states that Cletus liked to work on large (28×39”) charcoal boards\, so in his own words\, “I can approach the work with a sense of profligacy”. In 1978\, Van Stratten was killed by a hit-and-run driver on his way back from eating breakfast for dinner at a deli located on 2nd Avenue and 7th Street. “Sometimes I miss him\,” states Gagne. \nThis exhibit also includes artifacts that were found on or near Clete after he was run over\, only his money was missing (imagine that). “Cletus was also a huge Beatles fan and the drawings will include clues to one of his favorite songs on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.” \nThe Artist Reception is Saturday October 12 from 5 to 8pm. Van Stratten will be present in spirit and his alter-ego Ken Gagne will be on hand to discuss unusual this body of work.\n(Legal) refreshments will be served\, a splendid time is should be had by all…

SUMMARY:On the Beach - Eben Kling - Book Release
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling is a collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. The following is an excerpt from Eben Kling’s artist statement on On The Beach: \n“I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience. This exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. I would hope that providing a graphic space for the viewer to occupy while consuming the story and experiences contained in On the Beach will serve as a grounding\, and slightly less austere environment to live in story.\nThis show\, and this book serve as a testament to the whirring treachery\, and inversely\, the inviting prospect of change. “

SUMMARY:On the Beach by Eben Kling
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling\nNew Work and Book Release!\nOpening Reception: April 13th from 5-8PM \nExciting new exhibit/installation at the Elusie Gallery\, part of the 5th Annual Easthampton Book Fest! \nA collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. \nEben Kling’s Artist Statement: \n“I began to work on this book about two years ago. Though my background is in illustration\, I never studied nor made comics. The stereotype of a young boy pouring over super hero comics on the living room floor\, being scolded for smuggling them into the classroom or hanging outside the comic book shop was simply not my reality as a young man. I did and still do however\, have a fondness for cartoons. Their narrative quality\, and how well engineered they are to potentially describe the unfortunate reality of violence.\nWhen my Father died\, I was an MFA candidate in the studio arts department at UMass Amherst. I tried desperately to make work about the experience during my career there\, implementing symbols like the cowboys of gun smoke\, my father’s landscape photography\, and his collection of “smut”\, left behind in his wake. I began experimenting with sculpture\, collage\, found objects\, film etc. These all ultimately failed\, serving as un-satisfying inquiries into my father’s life and death.\nI don’t recall how I came about to begin this project which led me to comics. I do remember however\, the relief that I began to experience after drawing the very first page. I realized in that moment that I didn’t need to work with the idea of my father\, but rather\, I needed to talk about him directly. The narrative richness inherent in the medium that is comics offered itself to me freely and has influenced my practice in substantial way.\nHowever\, I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience.\nThis exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. “

SUMMARY:Silk Roads / Paper Trail
DESCRIPTION:Silk Roads/Paper Trails features Elisa Lanzi’s original hand pulled monotype prints\, handmade paper works\, as well as an illustrated haiku portfolio. The artist explores the geography of ancient silk routes – the crossroads\, oases\, and waterways – as avenues for conveying the invention of papermaking across the globe. Lanzi fuses her own family history\, real and imagined\, on to these same routes ending up in the Mediterranean.\nThe artist combines painterly monotypes created from non – toxic color inks with her own handmade paper (made from recycled rags) and Japanese washi paper in visualizing these cultural connections.\n“An artist finds inspiration through observation of the conscious and unconscious undertakings in our world. This show’s theme originates in a search to understand my place in the universe.\nAs I unearthed my DNA I discovered that while my family ended up in Italy\, there were earlier migrations from central Asia and the Middle East. I speculated that my ancestors traveled over parts of the ancient silk roads; those same paths that were used to convey the secrets of making paper from China to the Islamic Empire to Italy in the 13th century. The work in this show celebrates the mysteries of the past that are integral to our present.” \nSilk Roads/Paper Trails will run through April 6\, 2019. The artist\, Elisa Lanzi will be present at the festive opening reception on Saturday March 9th from 5 until 8 p.m. Find more information about the artist at www.elisalanzi.com and on Instagram @elisalanziartist.

SUMMARY:Boudoir Silhouettes
DESCRIPTION:Opposites attract:\nTrisha Moody-Bourbeau and Arnold Skolnick excel in very different media – the softness and suggestive touch of white chalk\, the twisted and welded metal elements – yet they both express a similar evocative sensuality.\nThey come together beautifully in this exhibit at the Elusie Gallery\, which is a prefect antidote to the winter blues. Join us for the Artists Reception Saturday February 9 between 5 and 8pm. Wear some Red\, and bring your Valentine!

SUMMARY:NEXT TO NOTHING: paintings at the edge
DESCRIPTION:Martha Braun’s work is most easily identified as painting though it contains elements of the\nsculptural and photographic as well. The work sits in the realm of non-representation\nand presents a point of focus for the silence of contemplation\, subtlety of color\, and the\nelegance of form.\nMartha Braun is a visual artist who received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from the\nMassachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston with residencies in Provincetown. She maintains her studio in Eaasthampton where\, beyond her artistic practice\, she is engaged in a study of color theory and color mixing for artists and in\ndoing research into the lives of oft-times forgotten (despite their excellence) artists who are women.

SUMMARY:Creatures of Discomfort
DESCRIPTION:Anthropomorphic Taxidermy by Erica Pinto\nStarting her career as an an avid photographer and potter from western Ma\, Erica found her interests twist in a new direction. In the mid 90’s she began her studies at the Birds in Woods Taxidermy Academy\, and acquired a deep study of the human body while attending the Connecticut Massage Therapy School. Her anthropomorphic taxidermy\, with a macabre and wry sense of humor\, is a nod to the Victorian craze.  She breathes new life into creatures with traditional taxidermy methods while adding seductive sculptural elements. Her work is a window into the humour noir of absurd beauty\, provoking discomfort as well as amusement.
