SUMMARY:Trace Meek at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Artist Trace Meek shares: \nLost Town is a series of paintings inspired by the true story of the four “lost towns” of the Swift River Valley — Dana\, Enfield\, Greenwich\, and Prescott\, Massachusetts — all of which were sacrificed in the name of progress. In the 1930s the four towns were flooded to create the Quabbin Reservoir\, to supply drinking water to the then-growing population of the Greater Boston Area. \nThis body of work is about loss. The people in these communities were forced to leave their homes and the land that they had grown to love. In a sense\, they lost a part of their identity\, in much the same way as indigenous peoples did when people from Europe moved in\, generations prior. Buildings were torn down\, and the whole place disappeared under water. \nBut this work is also about transcending loss by remembering. These paintings are sentimental portraits of real people and real places. But in the context of this show\, they serve as “actors” portraying similar people and landscapes that could have existed in the vanished valley\, and in the hearts and minds of the expatriates.”

SUMMARY:Cottage Street Studios: Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:The Elusie Gallery and ECA Gallery at Old Town Hall.\nArtists Reception: Saturday July 5\, 4-7pm \n“Join us in celebrating the enduring legacy and creative spirit of the Cottage Street Studios Artists Community. \nFor over 45 years\, Cottage Street Studios in Easthampton has been home to a dynamic community of artists and makers. As the first factory building in Easthampton to be transformed into artist studios\, Cottage Street Artists sparked a movement that deeply enriched the cultural landscape of the city. \nThis special exhibition\, held in both galleries of Ciy Space’s Old Town Hall\, showcases the work of more than 41 artists and makers\, past and present tenants of Cottage Street Studios \, who have contributed to the vitality of this essential arts hub. Featuring paintings\, photography\, printmaking\, ceramics\, fiber art\, sculptures\, fine crafts\, poetry\, and more\, this exhibit is a tribute to the resilience and history of our artistic community. \nDespite recent challenges—including the displacement of many artists and makers due to steep rent increases—our community remains vibrant\, close-knit\, and committed to enriching Easthampton and the surrounding region through the arts. \nCome be part of the story. Celebrate the past\, present\, and future of Cottage Street Studios Artists Community.”

SUMMARY:Cima Khademi at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:From the artist: \nIn “A Space in Between\,” my aim is to provide an artistic exploration of the unique immigrant experience\, one that often finds itself standing at the threshold of two remarkably distinct worlds. Through my work\, I seek to delve into the delicate equilibrium of class\, gender\, and ethnicity within the context of the diasporic realm. \nAn example of this nuanced balance can be seen in pieces like “Tiles in Menthol.” Here\, I aim to portray the intricate challenges and subtleties of growing up in Bessemer\, Alabama\, particularly the role my family played as a “middleman minority” – a role often filled by immigrants\, evident in businesses such as convenience stores and beauty shops. To reconcile with this pivotal transition in my life\, I have ingeniously transformed glossy cigarette cartons from my family’s store into ornamental and transitional elements reminiscent of Iranian architecture\, such as ceramic tiles. \nAs an example of a nuanced gender dynamics as an immigrant\, my series “Wall as a Veil” reflects the resilience of women in reclaiming public spaces. Witnessing their struggle from afar in the diaspora\, I utilize concrete\, plaster\, and hair as metaphors These three dimensional wall pieces are made to hint at everyday building facades such as brick walls and even traditional decorative elements. In contrast\, I am using hair as a metaphor for the female body pushing her way through this rigid material to reclaim the public space and therefore the public sphere.  \nWith this exhibition\, my fervent hope is to engage and inspire the diverse community in Easthampton\, offering a perspective on transition\, transformation\, and reclamation that is both unique and thought-provoking. \nBio: Cima Khademi is a visual artist with an MFA in Studio Arts from UMass Amherst and a BFA from University of Alabama in Birmingham. Khademi’s current work focuses on the unique experience of “identity” as an immigrant. The particular state where identity and homeland are called into question and we find ourselves simultaneously standing on the threshold of two worlds. Her experience of identity comes from two countries that are radically different. Her creative practice is an exploration of balance in a diasporic space regarding class\, gender\, and ethnicity through materials and metaphors.

SUMMARY:‘Dear Chronic Illness’ at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Rebecca Zablocki \nTitle + description: “Dear Chronic Illness” is an exhibition of handmade rugs\, found objects\, and writing. \nArtist Statement: \nWithin my work\, I utilize craft-based techniques\, such as rug making and sewing to create objects indicative of domestic spaces\, as well as found objects commonly present within medical spaces and chronically ill lives. I use pattern and color to mirror memories of pediatric medical spaces and the monotony of being confined within a bedroom\, simultaneously creating a bridge between the perseverance it requires to create a comfortable\, healthy environment and body\, and the discovery of beauty\, joy\, and humor in the spaces around us. My process is a personal tool for coping\, and my finished work becomes a tool for the viewer. My studio is an extension of my chronically ill life. I create in my home\, often while sitting in a place of rest; my bed\, couch\, floor cushion\, or mat. This process must be regenerative\, I have no other option. Through my work\, I open a window into the world of chronic illness and provide a safe environment that encourages empathy\, awareness\, and understanding\, exploring how we comfort ourselves and one another with beauty and care\, and by being a silly goose. \nBio: \nRebecca Zablocki is a chronically ill\, interdisciplinary artist based in New England. She creates mixed media\, installation-based work about her life as a chronically ill person and caregiver to her disabled partner. She relies on humor and softness to share the messages of her work\, currently\, predominantly through rug making.

SUMMARY:ACROSS / BETWEEN at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Easthampton City Arts (ECA) is pleased to present the first-ever ECA Invitational. We invite you all to experience this engaging and evocative exhibition during its opening reception at our upcoming Art Walk Easthampton on Thursday October 12th (5-8pm). \nThe ECA Invitational is an annual opportunity to highlight local artists whose work in some way addresses the spirit of the moment — and is presented together in a visual dialogue\, to further emphasize the complexities within and between them. \n‘Across / Between’ features Kathy Guo and Paul Specht\, who each engage with how we relate and are entwined. Guo’s sculptural and video works track from the tensions of intergroup communication to the aspirational potential for identification and solidarity between anonymous interlocutors. Specht’s photo portraits enmesh the sitter and artist\, queering the author-subject dynamic. Collectively\, the works in this exhibition embody pathways for forging relationships of mutuality\, a necessary and timely antidote to social fractures and violence. Guo and Specht utilize their roles as artists to imagine and propose possible futures. We choose what role we inhabit to realize that future. \nWe encourage you all to learn more about Guo and Specht’s creative practices here: \n@manguoes\n@paulspecht \nThis year’s pairing was selected and curated by ECA Program Director Pasqualina Azzarello\, ECA Chair Tracey Eller\, and ECA Committee Member Maude Haak-Frendscho — each of whom are also dedicated artists\, creative facilitators\, and community advocates.

SUMMARY:THIS LONG ARC: fiber sculptures by Terry Jenoure at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition speaks to themes of freedom from old patterns. Breaking from previous artistic approaches\, Terry Jenoure’s fiber sculptures are mostly unplanned shapes built almost exclusively with recycled cotton. During the artwalk on August 10\, two listening stations will be set up. These feature an experiment she made on my violin. Creating a notation system for herself\, she read the sculptures as musical “scores\,” translating their visual characteristics into music.  Sound engineer Warren Amerman then further sculpted the sounds digitally.

SUMMARY:“Merging\, Unknowing” at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Star is an interdisciplinary artist who recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue their MFA at Otis College of Art and Design. They hold a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  \nExploring imperfection\, vulnerability\, and a sense of play\, Star creates process-based textile compositions that also become giclée prints layered with simple drawings. The threads are intentionally left untrimmed\, seams visible and patterns displayed on the “wrong side.” Drawings of simple figures and swinging balls explore community\, aloneness\, vulnerability and protection invite us to ponder fate\, the unknown\, synchronicity and the universal power that makes all of life move.   \nContemplating immediacy and vastness at once by bringing the micro and macro together\, allegories emerge within the work about the significance and insignificance of the individual\, as well as speaking to destiny\, chance and destruction. By making these figures symbolically human without any defining attributes\, they invite everyone to see themselves in the work. \n— \nECA Gallery is open on Wednesdays & Fridays from 12-2pm.

SUMMARY:People\, Places and Things\, the Art of Amy Dawn Kotel
DESCRIPTION:Come witness a wax and wane between the hyper-colorful beauty of nature and life and the oddness and uncomfortableness that life can hold.  Amy Dawn Kotel’s work is vibrant and expressive and filled with the little details that create the big picture. For the last two years of the pandemic\, Amy has utilized her fear and discomfort to be prolific in her color pencil/watercolor pencil creations. Small circles energies have crept into many of her latest works\, helping to soothe her soul and please the eyes and bring hope the audience. Live musical landscapes\, from the musical group Panthalasa\, will accompany Amy’s art on May 6 from 6-9 (during Art Walk)\, bringing joy and hope to all the senses.

SUMMARY:Life Is But a Dream
DESCRIPTION:A Statement by Ron Morin: \nMost of my paintings are acrylic on canvas and a few include mixed media. Using a limited palette\, the paintings depict everyday objects in impossible situations. I paint “quiet” surrealistic scenes that are usually subtle and hopefully thought provoking. The objects in my paintings are treated realistically\, but in situations that could only exist in a dream. \nFor me\, painting is the ultimate exercise for the imagination. When there are no restrictions on subject matter treatment\, creativity is virtually unlimited. Ideas can come from anywhere and I especially love it when they come from nowhere; just pop in uninvited! When planning a painting\, I decide composition\, color\, tone\, etc\, but the subject is already there\, usually as a result of asking myself “what if?” Subtle humor almost always plays a part in my work. A successful painting for me is one in which the viewer smiles.

SUMMARY:A Nature Song by Fernando Molina
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Molina’s nature photography “reveals flora and fauna in it’s natural environment” and “the unexpected beauty of nature”. \nArtist Statement: \nEach of my photos is the result of patient hours spent in the field\, exploring\, learning\, feeling\, and seeing. Occasionally everything aligns and I get to bring home meaningful images\, but I enjoy every minute of the wilderness regardless of my photographic success. It is very important to me that my images are photographs\, and not paintings\, as it means that they are in fact real events that I experienced in real places. You could go out and see these places for yourself\, in fact\, I hope my images inspire you to do just that. \nFernando Molina is originally from Chile. He immigrated to the USA to join his wife and young son. He currently resides in Amherst.

SUMMARY:Seeking Possibilities by Marla Shelasky
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Possibilities shows my exploration of this technique during a time of transition in my life. While aesthetically this includes how color\, line and texture interact with each other in a weave structure\, the process is tedious in the physical making of it and presents innumerable opportunities for fine-tuning through design and problem solving — a process akin to working through the myriad of choices one encounters in life’s transitions. \nEach woven painting is created by first making two acrylic paintings on paper\, side-by-side\, while considering how each visual element will interact with the corresponding imagery on the other when they are woven together. As the paintings are cut into strips for weaving\, the minute lines and textures deep within the imagery present themselves clearly and beautifully on these narrow surfaces\, and then again as they float in and out with the woven structure. This process led to further exploration of piecing together small textured surfaces\, experimenting with color and texture combinations.

In the future\, many species I hope to see won’t exist. \nAnimals of all types are my favorite subjects to observe and photograph. When an animal looks at me I try to understand what it is telling me and to convey that message in my photographs. I plan to keep traveling\, see as much of the world as possible\, and present its unique sights to the world through photos.”

SUMMARY:Waxing Natural By Patricia Jenks
DESCRIPTION:Waxing Natural by Patricia Jenks\nWHEN: February 6th – March 2nd\, 2019\nART WALK ARTIST RECEPTION: Saturday\, February 9th\, 5-8pm\nWHERE: ECA Gallery\, 43 Main Street\, Easthampton\, MA 01027\n\n\nWaxing Natural highlights the sculptural work in encaustic by artist Patricia Jenks\, where the artist uses natural materials embedded in beeswax on hardwood panels to create unusual objects. Jenks’ mission is to give viewers a fresh perspective on ordinary natural materials by presenting them in extraordinary juxtapositions. For a more in depth exploration\, please refer to Jenks’ artist statement:\n\n\n“My current body of work using encaustic in 3D is about exploring how the natural world intertwines with our innermost needs\, wishes and desires—beauty\, mystery\, connection\, yearning\, passion. To me\, the natural color of beeswax is so luxurious and sensuous\, both in texture\, scent\, and to the eye. When intermixed with other types of unusual natural forms and colors\, the combinations that intuitively form themselves are both stimulating and new but also reminiscent of older more primal forms and visual expressions. I find that the circular format with its universal spiritual significance is a recurring image that finds its way into much of my work\, past and present\, 3D or 2D. It feels so intuitively whole\, calm and profound\, no matter what type of materials I may be working with at any given moment and I love the unpredictable things that happen even when using it repeatedly for a series of pieces. This body of encaustic work has been one of the most enjoyable I have worked on because I am so constantly surprised\, delighted and enlightened as I learn more about working with the wax and explore working with new natural found materials. At this point in my life\, having let go of many of my previous work obligations\, I am able to spend more time creating art that reflects my belief in expressing gratitude and wonder for the uniqueness of the naturally created world.”\n\n\nFind more information about the artist at www.patriciajenkswaxart.net

SUMMARY:Visual Poems
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST: Kate Whittaker \nTITLE: Visual Poems \nARTIST RECEPTION: Saturday October 13\, 5-8pm \nEXHIBITION DATES & GALLERY HOURS: October 2-30 \n“These images\, in hanging scroll format\, are composed of details of my paintings layered\, and sometimes overlain\, with photographs I have taken during my travels. As a poem can be said to paint an image\, here the two artforms of painting and photography combine to form a poetic narrative. They find their ‘voice’ in rhythmic patterns\, stanzaic structure\, calligraphic gesture\, juxtaposition of subjects\, tone\, color\, mirrored repetition\, and such. They are a response to my experience of our ancestral record and history\, commonality of language and expression\, the natural world\, its beauty\, and our effect upon it.” \nARTIST WEBSITE: www.katewhittaker.com
