SUMMARY:The Maelstrom\, a new gallery-wide installation Front Gallery by Harriet Diamond
DESCRIPTION:The great shipwreck art theme draws the viewer dramatically into chaos.  And what chaos it is!  The gallery is full of tumult with crashing waves\, whirlpools\, small boats and people in peril.  The installation Diamond says\, “It is an allegory for our times that at once mirrors my inward and our outward state.”     \nHarriet  has shown her works throughout New England\, notably at the Fitchburg Museum\, Chesterwood and The Albany Museum.  Recently she was awarded a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. \n

SUMMARY:A multimedia show “Marking Time” features sculpture\, prints\, and paintings by Deborra Stewart-Petengill and found object sculptures by BZ Reily.
DESCRIPTION:Deborra Stewart-Pettengill is showing sculptures\, paintings and prints created from 2020-2022. The work is inspired by natural forms and patterns\, without a direct reference. Some pieces respond to political\, cultural or pandemic related issues. Other pieces work with patterns and shapes to explore meditations on infinity\, balance\, and harmony. Conveying a sense of fluid motion\, shifting direction\, equilibrium and stasis\, continues to be a focus. Overall\, these abstract studies investigate the challenge of stabilizing turbulence in a time of volatility. \nBZ Reily presents a retrospective of found object sculptures created over the past ten years. Incorporating materials as diverse as antique baseball gloves\, industrial machine parts\, old children’s toys\, and natural elements\, these works possess their own sense of time and history. Unified by texture and color palette and inspired by reflections on a lifetime of making art\, together these abstracted figures tell evocative and sometimes mysterious new stories.

DESCRIPTION:Peter entered creative photography more than 50 years ago at a time when color imagery was generally seen as commercial and vulgar\, while the “purity” of the black-to-white tonal spectrum was felt (somewhat paradoxically) better-suited to both: a) the artistic-aesthetic transmission of meaning — and b) the pursuit of documentary objectivity. DESCRIPTION:Cut paper works by Margaret Humbert-Droz:  The utility knife and its mini cousin\, the X-Acto swivel knife\, are the tools she slices into\, slash or cut shapes out of a variety of papers she then assembles into images. Some are collaged into figurative landscapes; others play with geometry or dimension. DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Lehman and Will Sillin in the back room through June 26th \nLehman offers a new series of paired landscape drawings and paintings. Placed side by side\, the pairings invite the viewer to consider varied evocations of light\, land and sky – in the context of a single view. Sillin shares works from the canyon country of the American Southwest and his explorations of desert landforms and light. He served as Artist in Residence at Zion National Park in September\, 2021.

SUMMARY:"Clouds: from Above and Below"
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Gray’s paintings in the front gallery\, May 5 to 29\, inspired by 360 degree view of the sky in her new home. So much sky inspired her to fill the empty walls of the house with paintings of clouds. Observation of clouds at home naturally led me to observation of clouds from other promising viewpoints\, such as the passenger seat of the car\, and the window of the airplane. Her friend Terry Rumble made lovely ceramic sculptures\, so they discussed the possibility of showing cloud-themed work together someday\, but it was not to be\, as she passed away in 2017.
