SUMMARY:On the Beach - Eben Kling - Book Release
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling is a collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. The following is an excerpt from Eben Kling’s artist statement on On The Beach: \n“I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience. This exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. I would hope that providing a graphic space for the viewer to occupy while consuming the story and experiences contained in On the Beach will serve as a grounding\, and slightly less austere environment to live in story.\nThis show\, and this book serve as a testament to the whirring treachery\, and inversely\, the inviting prospect of change. “

SUMMARY:On the Beach by Eben Kling
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling\nNew Work and Book Release!\nOpening Reception: April 13th from 5-8PM \nExciting new exhibit/installation at the Elusie Gallery\, part of the 5th Annual Easthampton Book Fest! \nA collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. \nEben Kling’s Artist Statement: \n“I began to work on this book about two years ago. Though my background is in illustration\, I never studied nor made comics. The stereotype of a young boy pouring over super hero comics on the living room floor\, being scolded for smuggling them into the classroom or hanging outside the comic book shop was simply not my reality as a young man. I did and still do however\, have a fondness for cartoons. Their narrative quality\, and how well engineered they are to potentially describe the unfortunate reality of violence.\nWhen my Father died\, I was an MFA candidate in the studio arts department at UMass Amherst. I tried desperately to make work about the experience during my career there\, implementing symbols like the cowboys of gun smoke\, my father’s landscape photography\, and his collection of “smut”\, left behind in his wake. I began experimenting with sculpture\, collage\, found objects\, film etc. These all ultimately failed\, serving as un-satisfying inquiries into my father’s life and death.\nI don’t recall how I came about to begin this project which led me to comics. I do remember however\, the relief that I began to experience after drawing the very first page. I realized in that moment that I didn’t need to work with the idea of my father\, but rather\, I needed to talk about him directly. The narrative richness inherent in the medium that is comics offered itself to me freely and has influenced my practice in substantial way.\nHowever\, I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience.\nThis exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. “

SUMMARY:The Art of the Word
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening of #LOCAL Gallery’s latest exhibit\, “The Art of the Word” on April 13th from 5-8pm\, coinciding with Easthampton’s Bookfest. The exhibit explores the power of the word as it shows up in different art forms. We’ll look at how a word or sets of words can create a meaning that images alone could not\, and how the addition of a word can add a whole new level to a piece of art. The words can also give us more of an understanding of the artist’s creativity\, thoughts and feelings. \nAt 6pm we will be presenting a unique improv dance performance\, “Art_Words_Movement” performed by Michelle Marroquin\, Katelyn Cramer\, Danica Holoviak\, and Zazie Tobey with the live music of Tony Silva. \nThroughout the month #LOCAL will explore and expose different avenues of art that are used to communicate such as poetry\, video\, and storytelling: Music\, Monologues\, & Storytelling on April 20th from 6-8 and Poetry Night Out on May 1st from 6-8.

SUMMARY:Local Photographer Exhibit - Landscape Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Easthampton Media is pleased to announce a new group photography exhibit curated by The Robert Floyd Photo Gallery at our studio in Eastworks. \nGallery reception: Saturday\, March 9th from 5pm – 8pm during Art Walk Easthampton! \nLandscape Visualization: Intimate\, Sunsets\, and Water Colors\n“Water Colors” by Ms. Pat Crutchfield\, Southwick\n“Sunsets in Massachusetts” by Jack Grimaldi\, Ludlow\n“Intimate Landscapes” by Marc St. Onge\, Westfield \nThree advanced photographers. Three visions. They each capture a strong and compelling sense of place with their landscape artwork. Each artwork stands on its own yet all together they make a strong statement of the potential of visualization versus vision. Vision is what is while visualization is what can be. Every photographer used their visualization to create their artwork to separate it from the ordinary into something extraordinary. \nA portion of the proceeds of art sales support our 501c3 nonprofit community media center Easthampton Media. \nCome for the reception March 9th or stop by Monday-Friday 9am-5pm to view! Exhibit runs through March 31.\nEasthampton Media is located in the Eastworks Building\n116 Pleasant Street\n1st Floor – Suite 102

SUMMARY:intimate/infinite
DESCRIPTION:intimate/infinite\nWHEN: March 9th – April 6th\nOPENING RECEPTION: March 9th\, 2019;  7 – 11:30 PM\nWHERE: #LOCAL Gallery\n40 Cottage St\nEasthampton\, MA 01027 \nJoin us at #LOCAL for the Opening of “intimate/infinite”\, a thought-provoking and conversation-stimulating show. The exhibit\, curated by Amanda Barrow\, examines the nature of what is. While intimacy and infinity may at first seem to be opposites\, upon further reflection they can be seen to be deeply intertwined. This exhibition will feature paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed media\, all of which will explore nature and the abstract world from these perspectives. \nThe months of March and April are at the cusp of springtime\, and the intimate nature of humankind is kindled during the season. Infinite possibilities stretch ahead with summer\, fall\, and winter in an endless cycle. Intimate and infinite thoughts\, feelings\, and responses inspire us to move forward from the dark of winter into the light of spring. \nThe artists showing are: Scout Cuomo\, Lise Lemeland\, Kim Carlino\, Sharon Ligorner\, Maggie Nowinski\, and curator Amanda Barrow. Their work will feature paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed media\, all of which will explore nature and the abstract world. \nWe hope to expand your mind and open up deeper conversations about our reality in relationship to a larger purpose\, as well as the overlapping of realities. Allow the artwork to expand and open your mind to deeper conversations about what is\, what isn’t\, and what could be. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1194409764051297/

SUMMARY:Ultimate Safari in Southern Africa
DESCRIPTION:Ultimate Safari in Southern Africa: Photography by Vera Yanez\nWHEN: March 5th – March 27th\, 2019\nOPENING RECEPTION: March 9th\, 2019\nWHERE: ECA Gallery\, Old Town Hall\n42 MAIN STREET\nEASTHAMPTON\, MA 01027 \nUltimate Safari in Southern Africa: Photography by Vera Yanez will be on display March 5th – March 27th with an Art Walk Reception on March 9th in the ECA Gallery from 5-8pm. The exhibition consists of wildlife photography by Vera Yanez taken during a recent safari in Zimbabwe\, Botswana\, Zambia\, and South Africa. Yanez traveled to see animals in their natural habitat\, and would like to share the following artist statement with you: \n“I am in awe of the incredible diversity of life on this planet. There are millions of species of animals\, marine life\, plants\, flowers\, insects and invertebrates. Unfortunately\, we are ruining the earth with our disregard for the planet and its I creatures. In the future\, many species I hope to see won’t exist. \nAnimals of all types are my favorite subjects to observe and photograph. When an animal looks at me I try to understand what it is telling me and to convey that message in my photographs. I plan to keep traveling\, see as much of the world as possible\, and present its unique sights to the world through photos.”

SUMMARY:Silk Roads / Paper Trail
DESCRIPTION:Silk Roads/Paper Trails features Elisa Lanzi’s original hand pulled monotype prints\, handmade paper works\, as well as an illustrated haiku portfolio. The artist explores the geography of ancient silk routes – the crossroads\, oases\, and waterways – as avenues for conveying the invention of papermaking across the globe. Lanzi fuses her own family history\, real and imagined\, on to these same routes ending up in the Mediterranean.\nThe artist combines painterly monotypes created from non – toxic color inks with her own handmade paper (made from recycled rags) and Japanese washi paper in visualizing these cultural connections.\n“An artist finds inspiration through observation of the conscious and unconscious undertakings in our world. This show’s theme originates in a search to understand my place in the universe.\nAs I unearthed my DNA I discovered that while my family ended up in Italy\, there were earlier migrations from central Asia and the Middle East. I speculated that my ancestors traveled over parts of the ancient silk roads; those same paths that were used to convey the secrets of making paper from China to the Islamic Empire to Italy in the 13th century. The work in this show celebrates the mysteries of the past that are integral to our present.” \nSilk Roads/Paper Trails will run through April 6\, 2019. The artist\, Elisa Lanzi will be present at the festive opening reception on Saturday March 9th from 5 until 8 p.m. Find more information about the artist at www.elisalanzi.com and on Instagram @elisalanziartist.

SUMMARY:Sydney Allen at Kawaii Supply
DESCRIPTION:Come to Kawaii Supply and enjoy the art of \nSydney Allen \n@kittenpolyps \n    I’m a multimedia artist and I’ve been living in the valley and making art for as long as I can remember. Drawing is my absolute passion although I’ve been branching out into watercolor and acrylic painting again recently. I also love sculpture\, photography\, and sewing and I work in digital mediums from time to time as well. \nI draw inspirations from many different sources\, primarily comics and cartoons both eastern and western and I went to school for animation. I have a deep appreciation for handpainted cels (animation frames) and anime from the 80s and 90s\, a style that my work derives heavily from. \n    Mental Illness runs in my family and I address this theme frequently in my work as it has given me a unique view of the world. I often straddle the juxtaposition of youth and maturity\, as well as my struggles with my biggest critic and hurdle\, my own mind. Being a bipolar artist is both a blessing and a curse but I’m learning to use it to my advantage. \n    My ultimate goal is to become a tattoo artist. I believe that the human body is simultaneously a magical thing but also a huge burden. I’ve struggled with severe body dysmorphia since I was a teen and the therapeutic aspects of being tattooed have helped me so much and allowed me to let go of a lot of trauma and negative ideas I’ve carried about myself. I want to be able to talk to people about their lives and their struggles and make them happy with my art. \nUntil then I’m still working on my craft and challenging myself every day. For me art is primarily about the process on my end. It gives me more joy than anything and I love learning and improving. I definitely wouldn’t be here without it. \n  \n
