SUMMARY:“Merging\, Unknowing” at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Star is an interdisciplinary artist who recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue their MFA at Otis College of Art and Design. They hold a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  \nExploring imperfection\, vulnerability\, and a sense of play\, Star creates process-based textile compositions that also become giclée prints layered with simple drawings. The threads are intentionally left untrimmed\, seams visible and patterns displayed on the “wrong side.” Drawings of simple figures and swinging balls explore community\, aloneness\, vulnerability and protection invite us to ponder fate\, the unknown\, synchronicity and the universal power that makes all of life move.   \nContemplating immediacy and vastness at once by bringing the micro and macro together\, allegories emerge within the work about the significance and insignificance of the individual\, as well as speaking to destiny\, chance and destruction. By making these figures symbolically human without any defining attributes\, they invite everyone to see themselves in the work. \n— \nECA Gallery is open on Wednesdays & Fridays from 12-2pm.

SUMMARY:LANDING - Laura Radwell
DESCRIPTION:The Elusie Gallery: June 8 – July 6\nComposed of land\, sea\, and sky\, the perspective in these new works is both from above looking down to earth’s surface\, and from below looking to the sky. The paintings are roomy\, distant\, vast. Yet\, because they are (mostly) small in physical dimension\, the viewer’s journey can still be intimate\, as if in spite of the spaciousness\, it is possible to explore and hold the scenes within one’s gaze. \nThe vantage point arose in response to the increasing precarity\, division\, and conflict in the world around us\, events taking place on solid ground and changes in the air and sea that threaten the life as we know it on our planet. There is reassurance In recalling that human life is grounded in the land and that the sky\, ever-changing\, represents the potential for welcome developments. Though some of the paintings contain disturbances or agitation\, others are peaceful and offer respite. In both rising above the fray and in coming down to earth there is a settling\, a landing.

SUMMARY:31 Days of Kawase Hasui
DESCRIPTION:Moonlit Sea Prints is proud to announce its newest online-only exhibit\, “31 Days of Kawase Hasui”\, for the month of July. \nBorn in Tokyo in 1883\, Kawase Hasui became a master of Japanese landscape prints. He began his journey as an illustrator for books and magazines but soon discovered his heart belonged to printmaking through the insistence of his first publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. In 1918\, he began creating shin-hanga (“new prints”) and designed more than 600 prints during the following 40 years\, working with the publishers of Watanabe Shōzaburō\, Doi Hangaten\, Kawaguchi/Sakai-Kawaguchi\, Baba Nobuhiko\, and Bijutsu Shuppansha. \nHasui’s artwork encompasses a period of immense change and turmoil in Japan\, including the rapid Westernization in the 1880s\, the Sino-Japanese Wars\, the Russo-Japanese War\, World War I and World War II and its aftermath. Perhaps in response to these upheavals\, Hasui’s prints often bring about a sense of nostalgia for an “old” Japan while having scenes of quietness\, stillness\, and profound beauty. Perhaps in today’s technological alienation many of us can relate to the need for these moments. \nDuring July of 2023 we will begin with 30 Hasui prints ranging from his earliest shin-hanga to his later post-war works\, and then adding 10 new pieces each week for a total of 60 outstanding works. \nYou can view the growing collection all month long at https://moonlitseaprints.com/hasui/ \nMoonlit Sea Prints is a small gallery in the Eastworks Building of Easthampton MA that buys\, sells\, and educates on the genre of antique Japanese woodblock prints from roughly 1780-2000. Through their gallery in Easthampton and online shop they reach thousands of people each month\, showcasing exceptional work from a wide range of artists and giving visitors more knowledge on this oft-overlooked artform and art movement. \nInformation about Moonlit Sea Prints can be found at https://moonlitseaprints.com/
