DESCRIPTION:“Photographer Cara Totman and painter Arielle Jessop come together in a collaborative show to explore imagery found and created while working in and with water. In these pieces they examine the mediums in which they work and how each distorts\, evokes and portrays meaning. Jessop’s paintings are interpretations of images captured by Totman while the two artists were swimming together underwater. Totman’s images are photographs of friends and women having their own relationship with water and themselves. The pieces have been chosen by the artists to be displayed together as an exploration of how different mediums communicate different emotion. Each artist has felt a connection to water and felt healed by that connection and their artistic process relating to it. This show is a celebration of how this natural resource can act as a guide and inspiration.”

SUMMARY:Seeking Possibilities by Marla Shelasky
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Possibilities shows my exploration of this technique during a time of transition in my life. While aesthetically this includes how color\, line and texture interact with each other in a weave structure\, the process is tedious in the physical making of it and presents innumerable opportunities for fine-tuning through design and problem solving — a process akin to working through the myriad of choices one encounters in life’s transitions. \nEach woven painting is created by first making two acrylic paintings on paper\, side-by-side\, while considering how each visual element will interact with the corresponding imagery on the other when they are woven together. As the paintings are cut into strips for weaving\, the minute lines and textures deep within the imagery present themselves clearly and beautifully on these narrow surfaces\, and then again as they float in and out with the woven structure. This process led to further exploration of piecing together small textured surfaces\, experimenting with color and texture combinations.
