SUMMARY:Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:Moonlit Sea Prints of Easthampton MA is presenting its newest exhibition\, Masterpieces of Japanese Woodblock Prints\, an exhibition that explores the diverse and evolving tradition of woodblock printing in Japan. This collection features works from three key movements—ukiyo-e\, shin-hanga\, and sosaku-hanga—offering a glimpse into the changing artistic styles and approaches that have shaped this enduring medium. \nThe exhibition begins with the ukiyo-e prints of the Edo period\, featuring artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi\, Katsushika Hokusai\, and Utagawa Hiroshige. These works capture scenes from everyday life\, landscapes\, and folklore\, reflecting the culture and aesthetics of their time. The delicate line work and detailed compositions of these prints have made them lasting symbols of Japanese art. \nMoving into the early 20th century\, the shin-hanga movement sought to revive traditional woodblock printing while incorporating new influences. Artists like Kawase Hasui and Ito Shinsui brought fresh perspectives to subjects like landscapes and portraits\, combining elements of Western realism with Japanese themes. Their works convey a careful balance of tradition and modernity\, creating quiet\, contemplative images of a changing world. \nThe exhibition concludes with the more individualistic sosaku-hanga movement\, represented by artists such as Shiro Kasamatsu. Unlike earlier woodblock prints\, sosaku-hanga artists were involved in every stage of the process\, from design to carving and printing. This hands-on approach resulted in prints that often reflect personal expression and experimentation\, offering a different take on the art form. \nThrough these works\, the exhibition highlights the adaptability of Japanese woodblock printing\, showing how it has evolved while retaining its distinctive qualities. From the familiar scenes of ukiyo-e to the creative explorations of shin-hanga and sosaku-hanga\, these prints provide a thoughtful look at a centuries-old tradition. \nThe exhibit runs from November 1\, 2024 through November 28\, 2024\, and we encourage you to come during Eastworks Open Studios on Saturday\, November 2 (10-7pm) and Sunday\, November 3 (10-5pm).

SUMMARY:Hashi Pottery at Eastworks Open Studios
DESCRIPTION:Hashi Pottery will be participating in Eastworks Open Studios. Hashi sells one-of-a-kind\, handcrafted ceramics created by Japanese potters or potters who have studied Japanese pottery techniques. Each pot conveys the values that distinguish Japanese artisanship: respect for materials\, full mindfulness in the crafting process\, and selfless service to those who will use their wares. Our potters use natural clay and sometimes wild clay harvested locally\, and natural or homemade glazes made from local materials and most of the pots are wood-fired. When you use one of our cups\, bowls\, vases\, or serving vessels\, you will not only appreciate its beauty\, but also the natural materials and the loving effort that brought it to me. In this way\, the object deepens your attention to each moment and enhances your enjoyment of everything you do. Please visit us during Eastworks Open Studios and Art Walk in Eastworks Suite 141 (1st floor\, next to the RMV).

SUMMARY:Gary and DeeDee Niswonger: Color / Pattern / Life Front Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines for the first time the paintings of longtime Oxbow Gallery member Gary Niswonger with quilts made by DeeDee\, his wife of 61 years. Together they lived in Williamsburg MA\, in a home centered on a garden designed and established by DeeDee\, and painted by Gary. They shared a love of color and pattern\, and we celebrate their combined creations in this retrospective exhibition filled with paintings of DeeDee’s garden and bringing together her quilts and his abstract works. Gary died in February 2024.               Gary Niswonger received his BA from Miami University (Ohio) and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He taught for 38 years at Smith College. DeeDee spent over a decade working on behalf of regional schools in western Massachusetts. She has been a lifelong quilter and gardener\, and still lives in their house in Williamsburg. \nimage information: \nGary and DeeDee Niswonger: Color / Pattern / Life\, “High June”\, 2012\, 12 x 11″\, gouache on paper

SUMMARY:Liberated Paper: Amanda Petrovato’s Recycled Paper Pulp Artworks/ Easthampton Changes:A Participatory Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Emphasizing sustainability\, accessibility and experimentation\, Petrovato’s recycled pulp retains fragments of previous use\, with visible bits of text and color embedded in the pieces\, creating objects that evoke the awareness of the interconnection of all things. As objects\, they exist as records of a practice of contemplative experimentation\, each emerging from reflection upon transformation and renewal. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the dis-integration of a historically inspired map of Easthampton and to reflect on our relationship with and responsibilities around change to the town and our world. \nOpening reception Saturday November 2\, 4pm-7pm

SUMMARY:Eli Helman: Maximalist Ink Drawings
DESCRIPTION:About the Artist:\nSelf-taught artist Eli Helman grew up in Framingham\, Massachusetts before attending college at American University in Washington\, DC. Shortly thereafter\, he moved to Tucson\, Arizona where\, motivated by blank walls in his apartment and a fascination with the landscapes and wildlife of the American West\, he began experimenting with pencil sketching. \nUpon returning to New England a few years later\, he discovered Micron pens. Since then he has spent thousands of hours meticulously crafting highly detailed ink drawings. Emphasizing intricately drawn lines and patterns\, he explores eclectic subjects through a blend of whimsical and thought provoking imagery. Inspired by music\, humor\, travel\, nature\, science and history\, he hopes viewers will find something new — or at least have a good chuckle — every time they gaze upon his work. \nAll original works are drawn by hand with Micron pens on paper.  Some pieces take over 200 hours to complete. \nSince 2010 he has been a full-time artist traveling around the country showing his work at art festivals.  He lives in Western Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Meanderings by Pamela Acosta
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Acosta is a Mexican artist from the borderlands along the Rio Grande Valley. She creates visual narratives about a myriad of beings\, quests and the symbiotic relationships formed between beings and their environments\, exploring how we construct\, transform and are transmuted by our surroundings. She is currently developing a body of work that deals more closely with the poetics of flora\, fauna\, and connections in the natural world.
