SUMMARY:ACROSS / BETWEEN at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Easthampton City Arts (ECA) is pleased to present the first-ever ECA Invitational. We invite you all to experience this engaging and evocative exhibition during its opening reception at our upcoming Art Walk Easthampton on Thursday October 12th (5-8pm). \nThe ECA Invitational is an annual opportunity to highlight local artists whose work in some way addresses the spirit of the moment — and is presented together in a visual dialogue\, to further emphasize the complexities within and between them. \n‘Across / Between’ features Kathy Guo and Paul Specht\, who each engage with how we relate and are entwined. Guo’s sculptural and video works track from the tensions of intergroup communication to the aspirational potential for identification and solidarity between anonymous interlocutors. Specht’s photo portraits enmesh the sitter and artist\, queering the author-subject dynamic. Collectively\, the works in this exhibition embody pathways for forging relationships of mutuality\, a necessary and timely antidote to social fractures and violence. Guo and Specht utilize their roles as artists to imagine and propose possible futures. We choose what role we inhabit to realize that future. \nWe encourage you all to learn more about Guo and Specht’s creative practices here: \n@manguoes\n@paulspecht \nThis year’s pairing was selected and curated by ECA Program Director Pasqualina Azzarello\, ECA Chair Tracey Eller\, and ECA Committee Member Maude Haak-Frendscho — each of whom are also dedicated artists\, creative facilitators\, and community advocates.

SUMMARY:FIBRATIONS - Carol Ingram
DESCRIPTION:When I work with fiber to make felt\, I feel like I am painting with the wool.\nAnd when I am making a three-dimensional piece\, such as a vessel\, I am a potter again.\nStitching on the felt for embellishment is meditative\, like mending.\nThis body of work is more about the excitement of the making rather than a single theme. Each piece offered surprises and challenges in the process\, which came together like the single fibers that find each other to make a strong fabric.

DESCRIPTION:Moonlit Sea Prints of Easthampton MA presents its May exhibition\, “An Exploration of the Works of Shiro Kasamatsu”\, featuring a wide selection of the works of Shiro Kasamatsu. \nOpening Thursday\, March 14th from 5pm to 8pm. \nOpen Monday – Friday\, 10am-2pm by appointment only. \nMoonlit Sea Prints\n116 Pleasant Street\, Suite 226\nEastworks\nEasthampton\, MA 01027 \nShiro Kasamatsu (January 11\, 1898 – June 14\, 1991)\, a luminary of 20th-century Japanese art\, left an indelible mark on the world of mokuhanga (木版画)/ printmaking\, capturing the essence of Japan’s landscapes\, cityscapes\, and daily life through his intricate woodblock prints. \nShiro Kasamatsu was born in 1898 in Tokyo\, a city that would become a prominent subject in his art. Early in his artistic career\, he studied under Kaburagi Kiyokata\, a renowned Nihonga painter\, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for traditional Japanese art. This early influence is evident in his work’s meticulous attention to detail and traditional subject matter. However\, Kasamatsu also embraced modern artistic trends\, seamlessly combining them with traditional ukiyo-e techniques. \nKasamatsu’s artistic journey found expression in two prominent movements within Japanese printmaking: Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga. In the Shin Hanga\, or “New Print\,” movement\, artists like Kasamatsu worked closely with publishers and traditional woodblock carvers and printers to produce high-quality prints that retained traditional aesthetics while incorporating contemporary themes. Kasamatsu’s Shin Hanga works\, characterized by their vivid colors and evocative compositions\, garnered widespread acclaim. \nConversely\, Kasamatsu also ventured into the Sosaku Hanga\, or “Creative Print\,” movement\, which emphasized the artist’s autonomy in the entire printmaking process\, from design to carving and printing. In this sphere\, he displayed his versatility and innovation by personally engaging in the technical aspects of printmaking. This duality in his approach\, or evolution in his artistic vision\, showcased Kasamatsu’s adaptability and versatility as an artist. \nThroughout his prolific career\, Kasamatsu collaborated with various publishers\, including Watanabe Shozaburo\, Doi Sadaichi\, and Unsodo\, among others. These collaborations not only expanded his reach but also allowed him to experiment with different techniques and styles. The synergy between Kasamatsu and these publishers produced some of the most iconic and sought-after woodblock prints in the Shin Hanga tradition. \nShiro Kasamatsu’s artistic legacy extends beyond his own work. His influence on subsequent generations of artists\, particularly those exploring woodblock printmaking\, cannot be overstated. His ability to harmonize tradition and modernity served as a beacon for artists seeking to redefine Japanese printmaking\, making him a prominent figure in the continued evolution of this revered art form.

SUMMARY:‘Dear Chronic Illness’ at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Rebecca Zablocki \nTitle + description: “Dear Chronic Illness” is an exhibition of handmade rugs\, found objects\, and writing. \nArtist Statement: \nWithin my work\, I utilize craft-based techniques\, such as rug making and sewing to create objects indicative of domestic spaces\, as well as found objects commonly present within medical spaces and chronically ill lives. I use pattern and color to mirror memories of pediatric medical spaces and the monotony of being confined within a bedroom\, simultaneously creating a bridge between the perseverance it requires to create a comfortable\, healthy environment and body\, and the discovery of beauty\, joy\, and humor in the spaces around us. My process is a personal tool for coping\, and my finished work becomes a tool for the viewer. My studio is an extension of my chronically ill life. I create in my home\, often while sitting in a place of rest; my bed\, couch\, floor cushion\, or mat. This process must be regenerative\, I have no other option. Through my work\, I open a window into the world of chronic illness and provide a safe environment that encourages empathy\, awareness\, and understanding\, exploring how we comfort ourselves and one another with beauty and care\, and by being a silly goose. \nBio: \nRebecca Zablocki is a chronically ill\, interdisciplinary artist based in New England. She creates mixed media\, installation-based work about her life as a chronically ill person and caregiver to her disabled partner. She relies on humor and softness to share the messages of her work\, currently\, predominantly through rug making.

SUMMARY:Nathan Bolton @ ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION STATEMENT \nDo It for the Boys follows the Los Angeles Rebellion – one of the United States’ four original Queer/Inclusive rugby teams. A member of the team for 6 years\, I began to document my friends and teammates during this increasingly uncertain time after a dislocated leg caused me to retire permanently from playing. \nAs they returned to the field for their 20th season amid increasingly violent anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric sweeping across the country\, I found the Rebellion as stalwart\, passionate and determined as ever. With a 6×7 camera and a tripod (my hands being occupied by crutches) I began to work fervently – hoping to capture even a portion of the energy\, community\, and of course sexuality\, that defines the team and its members. \n“It’s intoxicating isn’t it?” My teammate Ben said to me at a bar after a game\, “Being out in public.” This was a place where they were their true selves\, on and off the pitch. \nNot just a team but a chosen family – ready to bleed for one another if that’s what it takes. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nFew things in the world\, and fewer things still in America\, exist without the ensnarement of capital. Club rugby is one of them. Three times a week\, the Rebellion gathers to slam into each other and their opponents—with only cold beer\, cheap pizza and bruises waiting on the other side. Games are played underneath overpasses and alongside highway exits to Seaworld\, at a high school in the High Desert or a neighborhood park in Temecula (there the ground is mercifully soft\, sod applied over soil\, not dirt on top of concrete landfill). Nothing is expected and nothing is given except competition and hopefully friendship. \nAt its core this work is a celebration of the Amateur and the Queer – those who apply themselves to their passions and communities without concern for reward. Without them we would not have the things that make life worth living\, the people who love and support us regardless of who we are\, and the spaces that have been fought and paid for with the lives of those that have come before us. Because when we finally learn to separate ourselves from archaic forms of valuation and identification\, that is when we are truly free to be exactly who and what we want – like\, for instance\, a Gay Rugby Team. \nARTIST BIO \nNathan Bolton is a photographer from Boston\, MA. His current work focuses on the act of generating and sharing joy in the face of looming environmental collapse\, and examining the experience of growing up\, living in and returning to\, an origin point of the American National Myth and Empire.

SUMMARY:Cima Khademi at ECA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:From the artist: \nIn “A Space in Between\,” my aim is to provide an artistic exploration of the unique immigrant experience\, one that often finds itself standing at the threshold of two remarkably distinct worlds. Through my work\, I seek to delve into the delicate equilibrium of class\, gender\, and ethnicity within the context of the diasporic realm. \nAn example of this nuanced balance can be seen in pieces like “Tiles in Menthol.” Here\, I aim to portray the intricate challenges and subtleties of growing up in Bessemer\, Alabama\, particularly the role my family played as a “middleman minority” – a role often filled by immigrants\, evident in businesses such as convenience stores and beauty shops. To reconcile with this pivotal transition in my life\, I have ingeniously transformed glossy cigarette cartons from my family’s store into ornamental and transitional elements reminiscent of Iranian architecture\, such as ceramic tiles. \nAs an example of a nuanced gender dynamics as an immigrant\, my series “Wall as a Veil” reflects the resilience of women in reclaiming public spaces. Witnessing their struggle from afar in the diaspora\, I utilize concrete\, plaster\, and hair as metaphors These three dimensional wall pieces are made to hint at everyday building facades such as brick walls and even traditional decorative elements. In contrast\, I am using hair as a metaphor for the female body pushing her way through this rigid material to reclaim the public space and therefore the public sphere.  \nWith this exhibition\, my fervent hope is to engage and inspire the diverse community in Easthampton\, offering a perspective on transition\, transformation\, and reclamation that is both unique and thought-provoking. \nBio: Cima Khademi is a visual artist with an MFA in Studio Arts from UMass Amherst and a BFA from University of Alabama in Birmingham. Khademi’s current work focuses on the unique experience of “identity” as an immigrant. The particular state where identity and homeland are called into question and we find ourselves simultaneously standing on the threshold of two worlds. Her experience of identity comes from two countries that are radically different. Her creative practice is an exploration of balance in a diasporic space regarding class\, gender\, and ethnicity through materials and metaphors.
