SUMMARY:Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:This Art Walk at LOCAL we continue our beautiful exhibit with the spectacular art of 3 amazing local artists. \nGrounded in a love of the natural world\, the work of Amanda Quinby\, Catherine Gibbs and Adell Donaghue explores Light as the subject. Using a variety of materials\, including gilded surfaces\, oil on canvas\, and graphite and ink on paper\, these artists offer a panoply of interpretations of both the idea and phenomenon of Light. For each of these artists\, the exploration of Light is the primary subject. \nOil painter Gibbs describes her paintings as a way of “becoming attentive to the splendid drama of the everyday world.” Gilder and photographer Quinby notes her “ongoing fascination with the mercurial role of light and its influence on how we see the world.” Painter and printmaker Donaghue describes the “transformation of physical materials into light as a deeply spiritual experience.” \nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:All Our People
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an exhibition by amy dame and Ahalya Raman at MAP Space in Eastworks. \n“I am here to tell you that the photograph and quilt have a lot in common. Some of this material is straightforward\, but other parts are twisting. If you aren’t twisting then maybe you should try a twist. Dame’s quilts follow some tradition in form and function. As a tool of communication\, a traditional storytelling of the lives abstracted in Raman’s photographs. They are both using their hands to tell from history and present day. They’ve chosen from fragments of leftovers and visits with lovers. A smart device can snap one in a fragment of a second. Eventually the whole is stitched together. It takes hours. It takes days! It takes months. It can take years!\n\n\nThis is life and it’s gay and multidimensional. I should clarify that I am using the word gay interchangably with queer\, and I’m using the word queer interchangable with power. Forgive me but gayness has a ring to it. It feels like history and that makes it feel precious to me. The hankie quilt is exactly the texture of gayness. Just then Amy Dame reminds us there is more to unpack. But why put a box over the face? This feels more like queerness. We have overturned the bright symbolic colors in exchange for our ethereal glances; habitually opening apps\, the palm upturned”.\n\n\n— Exhibition Statement by Suz Evans\n\nBIOS:\n\namy dame combines art and craft to create pieces that express the experiences\, beliefs and political convictions that guide their life as a fat queer femme genderqueer person with invisible disabilities.\n\nAhalya Raman was born in India\, and currently lives in Western Massachusetts. She is interested in memory\, in what remains\, and looking back in order to look forward.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special event — A Meat for Tea author reading with Andrew Varnon! Andrew will read his essay “The Other Side of the Net”. This event is drop-in.  \nIn “The Other Side of the Net\,” writer Andrew Varnon imagines playing tennis with the ghost of David Foster Wallace\, the author of the monumental novel Infinite Jest. Wallace committed suicide in 2008\, but has a devoted following of readers and fans. In his essay\, Varnon describes how he came to read Wallace’s novel Infinite Jest through his interest in tennis. The novel is partially set at the fictional Enfield Tennis Academy in Massachusetts. In the tennis community\, Wallace is also known for his essay on tennis icon Roger Federer\, “Both Flesh and Not\,” and is widely credited with the appellation for tennis as “chess on the run.” In his essay\, Varnon engages Wallace’s writing style – complete with end notes – and explores the idea of how the activity of reading and writing is\, in fact\, like playing tennis. \nWriter and teacher Andrew Varnon lives in Greenfield with his wife and family. He is the boys tennis coach at Greenfield High School and an active recreational tennis player. He is also a journalist and an award-winning poet. “The Other Side of the Net” was originally published online at The Smart Set (www.thesmartset.com/the-other-side-of-the-net/) and was republished locally in Meat for Tea. Varnon presented a portion of his essay to the David Foster Wallace Conference in Normal\, Illinois\, this June.

SUMMARY:The Lost Seclusion Drawings of Cletus van Stratten
DESCRIPTION:The Elusie Gallery is hosting (ghosting?) an exhibit of a very strange nature. Please read with caution and a sense of humor…\nBelow is the press release that Van Stratten concocted with incredible foresight more than 40 years ago…or by his alter ego Ken Gagne…? \nFor Immediate Release \n“The Lost Seclusion Drawings” by Cletus Van Stratten at The Elusie Gallery \nOctober 10 – November 5 with the opening Reception on Saturday October 12: 5-8 PM \nIn Easthampton\, Massachusetts\, the Elusie Gallery is a space that showcases “local and not-so-local talent\, established and emerging artists\, and the unexpected”. Unexpected is a good way to describe the Lost Seclusion Drawings exhibit by Cletus Van Stratten. \nRecently rediscovered by Van Stratten’s alter-ego Ken Gagne\, a fellow artist and Easthampton resident\, these large charcoal drawings were done by Van Stratten\, in 1975 in NYC. For three months Clete retreated in a dimly lit room furnished with only one chair\, ingesting varying amounts of hallucinatory drugs\, hoping to unravel the secret truths of the universe. Every week one visitor was allowed to enter the room\, serving as a model for Van Stratten’s drawings. This exhibit is the fruit of these weekly visits. Gagne states that Cletus liked to work on large (28×39”) charcoal boards\, so in his own words\, “I can approach the work with a sense of profligacy”. In 1978\, Van Stratten was killed by a hit-and-run driver on his way back from eating breakfast for dinner at a deli located on 2nd Avenue and 7th Street. “Sometimes I miss him\,” states Gagne. \nThis exhibit also includes artifacts that were found on or near Clete after he was run over\, only his money was missing (imagine that). “Cletus was also a huge Beatles fan and the drawings will include clues to one of his favorite songs on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.” \nThe Artist Reception is Saturday October 12 from 5 to 8pm. Van Stratten will be present in spirit and his alter-ego Ken Gagne will be on hand to discuss unusual this body of work.\n(Legal) refreshments will be served\, a splendid time is should be had by all…
