SUMMARY:CATALOG - Collages - Michael Sjostedt
DESCRIPTION:November 4\, 2022 – November 30\, 2022\n \nArtist Reception: Friday November 4\, 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Part of Artwalk Easthampton \nI grew up with catalogs. Sears\, JC Penny\, Montgomery Ward. Giant bibles of cool stuff. As a kid\, I’d dive into the catalogs from cover to cover when they arrived in the mail\, closely studying the toys\, bikes\, furniture\, and the men’s clothes. \nI haven’t flipped through these “cultural artifacts” in nearly 40 years. When I did\, I got lost again. Page after page was jampacked with so much information—practical\, like over-sized pricing\, and editorial\, like the idealized man in everyday scenarios. Doing a deep dive into these vintage catalogs as an adult—and with a 21st century lens—showed me how much of a role “the tools of consumerism” informed the foundation of my identity—and how I viewed and compared myself to others. \nWhen I started the series\, I wanted to create evidence of how I consumed imagery and messages that I had a deep\, charged history with. I started from instinct\, not overthinking the process—like I did when I was “shopping”: culling\, layering\, extracting\, and incorporating other materials and techniques that connected with the experience and subject matter—sewing patterns\, pencil-drawn grids\, tape transfers. \nThe final collection illustrates how I look out to look in—and look out again. The messy visual narrative is what it felt like to catalog my experience with content focused on buying what you can be. \nMichael Sjostedt

SUMMARY:What I Brought with Me
DESCRIPTION:What I Brought with Me (away from the motherland)\, shows a collection of paintings by Eva Lin Fahey that hold loss and connection close together. The precursor to a larger body of research-based work to come\, this show starts the conversation on how new generations learn and remember the histories of their families. While these paintings center specifically on the ripple effect of China’s One Child Policy and the scattering of families that resulted\, Fahey is deeply led by the complex roles our families play in the creation of our identities. She wonders\, through her paintings\, what she brought with her from her birth family\, and what was left behind.

SUMMARY:Exquisite Variants show with Maggie Nowinski and Alicia Renadette
DESCRIPTION:Maggie Nowinski and Alicia Renadette share original collage and drawing works on panel and paper from their ongoing collaboration\, Exquisite Variants.  While Nowinski’s work often finds form in complex and meticulously rendered pen and ink drawings\, Alicia Renadette creates vibrant assemblage sculptures and installations. Both artists intuitively incarnate themes of trauma and resilience as improvised entanglements of biological and botanical systems. This selection of works at Wonderland marks the first time this collaboration is on view in Wesetern Mass! All works are for sale and limited editing prints will be available for purchase as well. SUMMARY:Victorian Paper Snowflakes Demo and Chocolate Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Making designs with curls of paper is probably centuries old\, but really came to shine during the Victorian era. Our quilling artist and store owner\, Lauren Grover\, will be demonstrating how to take simple tools of paper\, glue\, and a needle\, and turn them into gorgeous snowflakes suitable for framing or as holiday ornaments. We will have some previous works for sale\, and you can place an order for your own choice of color and pattern. You can also sign up for classes on how to make your own! \nWe will also be hosting a chocolate tasting for our line of absolutely amazing Willie’s Cacao chocolate bars. They’re handcrafted\, single estate bars made on machines over 100 years old. Most chocolates Americans get is from a plant bred to produce as many beans as possible\, with flavor being secondary. These are a different variety\, and you’ll taste the difference right away\, with varietal flavors similar to wine’s complexity. We’ll be offering Milk of the Stars\, a 60% cacao from Indonesia with complex caramel tones\, Rio Caribe Gold\, a vegan 72% from Venezuela with notes of nuts and coffee\, Chulcanas Gold\, a vegan 72% from Peru with notes of raisins and plums\, Ginger Lime\, a vegan 70% from Cuba with layers of flavors\, and Pistachio and Date\, a vegan 100% from Rio Maranon\, with no added sugar\, just the fruit. Terrific for diabetics! These all sound like they’re super dark\, but without the bitter taste of common beans\, you may find you like them darker than you’d thought. \nThe rest of the store will also be open\, featuring quilling kits\, diamond painting kits\, henna body art\, chocolates\, and our handmade skin care line.

SUMMARY:A multimedia show “Marking Time” features sculpture\, prints\, and paintings by Deborra Stewart-Petengill and found object sculptures by BZ Reily.
DESCRIPTION:Deborra Stewart-Pettengill is showing sculptures\, paintings and prints created from 2020-2022. The work is inspired by natural forms and patterns\, without a direct reference. Some pieces respond to political\, cultural or pandemic related issues. Other pieces work with patterns and shapes to explore meditations on infinity\, balance\, and harmony. Conveying a sense of fluid motion\, shifting direction\, equilibrium and stasis\, continues to be a focus. Overall\, these abstract studies investigate the challenge of stabilizing turbulence in a time of volatility. \nBZ Reily presents a retrospective of found object sculptures created over the past ten years. Incorporating materials as diverse as antique baseball gloves\, industrial machine parts\, old children’s toys\, and natural elements\, these works possess their own sense of time and history. Unified by texture and color palette and inspired by reflections on a lifetime of making art\, together these abstracted figures tell evocative and sometimes mysterious new stories.

SUMMARY:Place: a photo show by the West Springfield High School Photo Class
DESCRIPTION:The photographers of West Springfield High School have chosen “PLACE” for the theme of their first show of the 22-23 school year. Students were asked to reflect on their most recent “moving experiences”\, and many chose works closely connected to places or locations that they held dear. The photographers decided that this would be a good chance to share a beloved “place” with our greater community.

SUMMARY:Carol Ostberg Tabletop Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Carol Ostberg\n“I have been painting furniture and creating holiday and year round ornaments for quite some time. It has resulted in an accumulation of furniture legs\, trim bits\, beads and baubles. Then came a Covid pause and time for reflection and experimentation; \n‘This furniture leg turned upside down would make a great base. I wonder how big I could make the bird ornament form? There would be more surface area for embellishment and the wing could be articulated. How large do they make those star forms?’ \nEnter; Table Top Sculptures\nThey are colorful multi media expansions of the ornaments I’ve been making for years. Each has the option to be personalized with a tag. You can write a wish\, message or mantra for yourself or someone else. They are colorful and unexpected and I hope they bring a smile to viewers. We all need more of that.”

SUMMARY:Jeff Jakobs & Friends Vinyl Release
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Jakobs & Friends are touring New England to share his debut album\, The Milk Barn Sessions. Having performed mostly in New York City\, Jakobs is excited to bring his music to wider audiences. \nPitch Perfect describes The Milk Barn Sessions as “rustic poetry\,” filled with “slyly humorous lyricism\, clever metaphor\, and brilliant turns-of-phrase.” The album was an opportunity for Jakobs to take his usual solo acoustic music to the studio\, or milk barn\, for a chance to expand his sonic palette. Brass choirs\, psychedelic harmonica\, and orchestral strings evoke Bohemian cafes and early Tom Waits. Singles from the album have aired on local radio stations\, including being featured on WFUV’s “NY Slice.” Jakobs will also be debuting his brand new backing band for the release tour. \nThe Milk Barn Sessions is now available at www.jeffjakobs.com.

SUMMARY:“We are Gardens Haunted by Each Other” by Michael Medeiros
DESCRIPTION:A COLLABORATION OF CLAY\, WORDS\, AND COMMUNITY AMIDST AN APOCALYPSE \n“We are Gardens Haunted by Each Other” exhibition runs through February 9th at 50 Arrow Gallery \nEASTHAMPTON\, MA – “We are Gardens Haunted by Each Other\,” the new exhibition at 50 Arrow Gallery in the Eastworks building\, opened quietly on Saturday\, December 10\, beginning nearly two months of community collaborations in art\, words\, and garden-centric myth-making facilitated by ceramic artist and poet Michael Medeiros. \nThe 192nd anniversary of the poet Emily Dickinson’s birth was marked in that space by Medeiros and\npainter Johanna Hoogendyk inscribing excerpts from Dickinson’s letters upon fifty-five small moonshaped terracotta vessels. A tribute to Dickinson’s fifty-five years of life\, each vessel would be put into a pit firing that evening to smoke the letter excerpts permanently into the clay. The vessels will be used\, throughout the duration of this exhibition\, to contain letters that will be sent daily all over the world much as Dickinson connected to the outside world amidst her solitude through her own frequent letter\nwriting. \nDickinsonian vessel-writing is just one aspect of the interactive nature of “We are Gardens Haunted by\nEach Other.” The foundation pieces in the exhibit are Medeiros’ ceramic vessels and sculptures\, largely\nmade out of locally-dug terracotta clay. Medeiros will be welcoming in collaborators throughout the run\,\nand the exhibition will organically grow through these interactions. \n“I love the opportunity to bring my own ideas into communication with others’\, setting off an entirely\nunexpected creative chemical reaction that really is one of the main catalysts of my artistic and poetic\npractice\,” says Medeiros. “It’s so exciting that Jason and Alex at 50 Arrow Gallery are allowing me to run\nin this manner\, bringing in a bunch of creative voices to expand and give expression to this imagined\nworld. I find this important because\, as one friend pointed out\, I wasn’t so much excited about the\ndebilitating event of this near-future world\, but of how human existence manages to continue on in a\nsemblance of community despite a horrid calamity.” \nExhibit collaborators are asked to share memories of gardens\, wildernesses\, and specific plants that they\nwill write about—using liquid clay as the “ink”—directly upon the pottery. Medeiros\, who is PortugueseAmerican\, then fires the pieces using a traditional pit-firing method similar to that used by Portuguese\npotters in the town of Bisalhaes to create jet black terracotta pottery. He found a technique through\ntrial and error which allows the writing to emerge in the original orange-red terracotta color within the\nsmoked black background. \nPublic events—including readings\, musical performances\, and community art and writing sessions—are\nscheduled during Easthampton Arts Walk nights on January 4 and February 3 (the closing night of the\nexhibition). \nThe initial concept for “We are Gardens Haunted by Each Other” was developed by Medeiros and his\nformer UMass MFA for Poets and Writers colleague Marcella Haddad this past spring for a live reading\nat the Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens in Medeiros’s hometown of New Bedford\, MA. They conceived a\nworld in which a debilitating (and unnamed) event had happened\, throwing everyday life into chaos.\nThe “gardens” of the exhibit title refer to the locations of imagined individuals corresponding with each\nother and trying to gain a collective understanding of the new state of the natural world\, particularly the\nhuman-cultivated aspects of that nature. Much like Dickinson\, these post-apocalyptic writers exist\nphysically in a garden solitude and connect with a larger community through their written\ncorrespondence. \n“I spent five years working at the Emily Dickinson Museum\, which informed the experiences of my own\nimagined character who was living there and chronicling the post-apocalyptic version of her family\ngardens\,” says Medeiros. “The notion of inhabiting that space in such a cataclysmic new world was the\nimpetus for this whole project\, which has evolved in some excitingly unexpected ways thanks to the\nterrific input of friends and colleagues.” \n50 Arrow Gallery is located in Suit 244 in the Eastworks Building at 116 Pleasant Street in Easthampton.

SUMMARY:Japanese kacho-e and 413 Plant Swap
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2016\, after working in the yard with my wife and separating tons of irises\, I decided to create a Facebook group to facilitate the sharing/trading of plants in the local area\, the 413 Plant Share & Swap. While there was slow and steady growth in the beginning\, this group exploded during the pandemic and currently has ~3800+ members with plants (and advice!) being provided every day. For a long time I wanted to explore hosting an in-person plant swap\, and I think now could be that time. \nTo kickoff a lively 2023 filled with beauty\, what better way than to host an exhibit of kacho-e (bird and flower prints) and a 413 plant swap? \nWith that in mind\, this is what we’re doing: \n\nPeruse the art at your leisure\nSome small snacks and beverages\nBring cuttings (labelled please!) to share if you have some\nBring a way to take new cuttings or plants home with you\n\nRSVP is encouraged so we can plan accordingly!
