SUMMARY:Fiber Three Ways
DESCRIPTION:Fiber Three Ways showcases three artists all using fiber in very different ways to create art with non-traditional and innovative approaches to their mediums. \nDawn Allen\, Laura Bundesen\, and Katherine McClelland formed a professional artist group three years ago and have continued to meet regularly collaborating on artistic innovation\, marketing\, and business strategies. They are thrilled to be sharing the diversity of fiber art possibilities with you in their first group show. \nLaura’s neuro-art features brightly colored and very detailed embroidered paintings. Katherine’s work shows the amazing range of felt\, creating elaborate figurative images all in wool. And Dawn’s work combines her own method of digital painting with free-motion quilting on cotton fabric.

SUMMARY:Great American Road Trip
DESCRIPTION:“The Great American Road Trip” series features fiber art pieces colorfully depicting vintage cars and trucks “traveling” all over the United States. The inspiration behind the show is my experience as a mother of young children\, feeling trapped at times\, lacking the freedom to go where-ever\, when-ever! I chose to feature vehicles because the car is a symbol of total freedom. You can jump in and go anywhere at a moment’s notice. The nostalgia of the antique vehicles from 1940-1970 is an important aspect of my work. The intention is to evoke a sense of “the good old days”. Conveying the idea of being young and free and perhaps of “simpler” times. \nMost importantly “The Great American Road Trip” series is uplifting. The pieces are brightly colored\, cheerful images of places we can all relate to\, or places we would love to go.

SUMMARY:An Examination of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Statements by the Artists: Akinbo Akinnuoye & Rochelle Shicoff: \nAkinbo Akinnuoye \nWhen you look at photos in newspapers and magazines featuring tragedy at home and abroad\, how do you feel? Is it real for you? Can you relate? Are they things that just happen elsewhere to other people? Do you feel overwhelmed about the frequency of these events? Do natural disaster movies seem like more fact than fiction. What words would you use to describe these events? \nWith the ever increasing man-made and environmental violence in many parts of the world—through genocide\, terrorism\, and climate change (floods\, fire\, earthquakes\, tsunamis\, etc.)—the usual descriptions surrounding these events seem redundant (“horrible\,” “what a shame\,” “those poor people\,” “someone should do something.”) \nI chose to change the conversation by using hyperbolic\, bombastic\, over-the-top superlative language from “pull quotes” in movie reviews to shake up our sensitivities and reactions to these events. These quotes are intentionally used to entice the audience\, giving a sense of urgency to the picture advertised in front of them. The disaster movie is real\, it’s happening around us… \nRochelle Shicoff \nMy latest painting series about the empowerment of Palestinian women has emerged from my compassion for their circumstances and celebration of their resilience. \nIn 1980\, I was awarded the Rome Prize Fellowship in Painting and spent an extended period of time in Egypt. From my artist’s view point\, Egypt’s architecture\, ancient tomb carvings and paintings\, pottery markets\, camels\, and the people in their flowing garments left an everlasting impression on me. My long standing interest in Middle Eastern culture and my residing part time in Bay Ridge\, Brooklyn where my neighbors are primarily from Egypt\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Yemen\, and Palestine has influenced my two painting series about the Middle East. As I developed the images in this latest painting series\, I began to create miniature scenes at the tops to further describe the Palestinian women’s dignity\, the soldiers\, architecture\, and in one instance\, camel legs. Middle Eastern cultures have a profusion of patterns\, which I include in these paintings. \nMy art process is about problem solving and the interaction between colors\, shapes and lines. I think that all work created on one subject\, over an extended period of time\, unites and intensifies the concept and imagery.

SUMMARY:Life Is But a Dream
DESCRIPTION:A Statement by Ron Morin: \nMost of my paintings are acrylic on canvas and a few include mixed media. Using a limited palette\, the paintings depict everyday objects in impossible situations. I paint “quiet” surrealistic scenes that are usually subtle and hopefully thought provoking. The objects in my paintings are treated realistically\, but in situations that could only exist in a dream. \nFor me\, painting is the ultimate exercise for the imagination. When there are no restrictions on subject matter treatment\, creativity is virtually unlimited. Ideas can come from anywhere and I especially love it when they come from nowhere; just pop in uninvited! When planning a painting\, I decide composition\, color\, tone\, etc\, but the subject is already there\, usually as a result of asking myself “what if?” Subtle humor almost always plays a part in my work. A successful painting for me is one in which the viewer smiles.

SUMMARY:Love thy Beautiful Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:February has typically been the month for lovers at the Elusie Gallery. \n\nBut this year we find it difficult to celebrate love when intolerance and discrimination seem to be the new normal\, and the basic right to love and be loved is being taken away from so many\, whether it is the mass incarceration of children at the southern border or the wave of new anti-LGBTQ legislation being passed or considered in many parts of the country.\n\nBecause we should not accept this new normal\, and because LOVE needs to be celebrated\, always\, we have invited artists to submit artwork that celebrate a more universal kind of love\, the love of our neighbors\, ALL our neighbors\, the ones across the street\, across the border or across gender identifications. Love thy Beautiful Neighbors showcases the love of our differences\, these beautiful differences that still – and always will – define and unite this country.

SUMMARY:Concealed / Revealed by Beckie Kravetz
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of handmade masks and sculpture by Beckie Kravetz. \nArtist Statement: \nThe exhibition will feature contemporary figurative sculpture\, masks (both wearable and art masks)\, and a public art installation that welcomes contributions from the community. A workshop in painting self-portraits (for the public art piece) will be held on Saturday\, February 8th from 11AM-4PM (ongoing – drop in anytime)\, in conjunction with Winterfest. Materials for creating a self-portrait to add to the public artwork will be available in the gallery throughout the run of the exhibition. \nMy vision as a sculptor draws its inspiration from the theater and opera\, where I have worked as a mask-maker and makeup artist for over 30 years. In making masks for theater\, I created artworks which\, when combined with a living body moving under lights\, revealed fascinating and often unintended dimensions of the sculpted faces. As I watched my masks come to life on the actor\, I became intrigued with the notion of the “interface” — that point where the face of the actor meets the inner surface of the mask and is transformed into the character. This led to the creation of a series of sculptural (non-wearable) masks in which this inside surface becomes a canvas for elucidating the thoughts\, history and personality of the individual depicted in the sculpture. \nConcurrent with the evolution of these behind-the-mask portraits\, my sculpture expanded to include full figures\, some of which incorporate masks in variety of metaphorical functions. My theatrical background led me to consider both what is behind the mask\, and what goes on “behind the scenes” of the characters we play in both public and private moments. I strive to portray the gamut of human feeling\, captured in an instant of time. \nBeckie Kravetz studied mask making at Yale School of Drama\, and with master craftsmen around the world. She was the resident mask maker for Los Angeles Opera\, and has designed for theater\, opera and film. Beckie’s masks and sculptures have been exhibited nationwide. She was a Fulbright Fellow in Spain.
