SUMMARY:Urban Scenes
DESCRIPTION:Urban Scenes taken over the past few months by Richard Bulda. Many of these cityscapes are quasi-dystopian in their emptiness. Places like New York City’s Time Square and Hudson Yards\, which were crowded and vibrant earlier this year\, are now desolate. The risk is that scenes that should seem bizarre may begin to seem normal. Venice Beach and Las Vegas Art District: photos taken the last weeks of January\, 2020 before everything shut down. Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-6pm

SUMMARY:Fiber Three Ways
DESCRIPTION:Fiber Three Ways showcases three artists all using fiber in very different ways to create art with non-traditional and innovative approaches to their mediums. \nDawn Allen\, Laura Bundesen\, and Katherine McClelland formed a professional artist group three years ago and have continued to meet regularly collaborating on artistic innovation\, marketing\, and business strategies. They are thrilled to be sharing the diversity of fiber art possibilities with you in their first group show. \nLaura’s neuro-art features brightly colored and very detailed embroidered paintings. Katherine’s work shows the amazing range of felt\, creating elaborate figurative images all in wool. And Dawn’s work combines her own method of digital painting with free-motion quilting on cotton fabric.

SUMMARY:Great American Road Trip
DESCRIPTION:“The Great American Road Trip” series features fiber art pieces colorfully depicting vintage cars and trucks “traveling” all over the United States. The inspiration behind the show is my experience as a mother of young children\, feeling trapped at times\, lacking the freedom to go where-ever\, when-ever! I chose to feature vehicles because the car is a symbol of total freedom. You can jump in and go anywhere at a moment’s notice. The nostalgia of the antique vehicles from 1940-1970 is an important aspect of my work. The intention is to evoke a sense of “the good old days”. Conveying the idea of being young and free and perhaps of “simpler” times. \nMost importantly “The Great American Road Trip” series is uplifting. The pieces are brightly colored\, cheerful images of places we can all relate to\, or places we would love to go.

SUMMARY:An Examination of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Statements by the Artists: Akinbo Akinnuoye & Rochelle Shicoff: \nAkinbo Akinnuoye \nWhen you look at photos in newspapers and magazines featuring tragedy at home and abroad\, how do you feel? Is it real for you? Can you relate? Are they things that just happen elsewhere to other people? Do you feel overwhelmed about the frequency of these events? Do natural disaster movies seem like more fact than fiction. What words would you use to describe these events? \nWith the ever increasing man-made and environmental violence in many parts of the world—through genocide\, terrorism\, and climate change (floods\, fire\, earthquakes\, tsunamis\, etc.)—the usual descriptions surrounding these events seem redundant (“horrible\,” “what a shame\,” “those poor people\,” “someone should do something.”) \nI chose to change the conversation by using hyperbolic\, bombastic\, over-the-top superlative language from “pull quotes” in movie reviews to shake up our sensitivities and reactions to these events. These quotes are intentionally used to entice the audience\, giving a sense of urgency to the picture advertised in front of them. The disaster movie is real\, it’s happening around us… \nRochelle Shicoff \nMy latest painting series about the empowerment of Palestinian women has emerged from my compassion for their circumstances and celebration of their resilience. \nIn 1980\, I was awarded the Rome Prize Fellowship in Painting and spent an extended period of time in Egypt. From my artist’s view point\, Egypt’s architecture\, ancient tomb carvings and paintings\, pottery markets\, camels\, and the people in their flowing garments left an everlasting impression on me. My long standing interest in Middle Eastern culture and my residing part time in Bay Ridge\, Brooklyn where my neighbors are primarily from Egypt\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Yemen\, and Palestine has influenced my two painting series about the Middle East. As I developed the images in this latest painting series\, I began to create miniature scenes at the tops to further describe the Palestinian women’s dignity\, the soldiers\, architecture\, and in one instance\, camel legs. Middle Eastern cultures have a profusion of patterns\, which I include in these paintings. \nMy art process is about problem solving and the interaction between colors\, shapes and lines. I think that all work created on one subject\, over an extended period of time\, unites and intensifies the concept and imagery.

SUMMARY:Life Is But a Dream
DESCRIPTION:A Statement by Ron Morin: \nMost of my paintings are acrylic on canvas and a few include mixed media. Using a limited palette\, the paintings depict everyday objects in impossible situations. I paint “quiet” surrealistic scenes that are usually subtle and hopefully thought provoking. The objects in my paintings are treated realistically\, but in situations that could only exist in a dream. \nFor me\, painting is the ultimate exercise for the imagination. When there are no restrictions on subject matter treatment\, creativity is virtually unlimited. Ideas can come from anywhere and I especially love it when they come from nowhere; just pop in uninvited! When planning a painting\, I decide composition\, color\, tone\, etc\, but the subject is already there\, usually as a result of asking myself “what if?” Subtle humor almost always plays a part in my work. A successful painting for me is one in which the viewer smiles.
