SUMMARY:Waxing Natural By Patricia Jenks
DESCRIPTION:Waxing Natural by Patricia Jenks\nWHEN: February 6th – March 2nd\, 2019\nART WALK ARTIST RECEPTION: Saturday\, February 9th\, 5-8pm\nWHERE: ECA Gallery\, 43 Main Street\, Easthampton\, MA 01027\n\n\nWaxing Natural highlights the sculptural work in encaustic by artist Patricia Jenks\, where the artist uses natural materials embedded in beeswax on hardwood panels to create unusual objects. Jenks’ mission is to give viewers a fresh perspective on ordinary natural materials by presenting them in extraordinary juxtapositions. For a more in depth exploration\, please refer to Jenks’ artist statement:\n\n\n“My current body of work using encaustic in 3D is about exploring how the natural world intertwines with our innermost needs\, wishes and desires—beauty\, mystery\, connection\, yearning\, passion. To me\, the natural color of beeswax is so luxurious and sensuous\, both in texture\, scent\, and to the eye. When intermixed with other types of unusual natural forms and colors\, the combinations that intuitively form themselves are both stimulating and new but also reminiscent of older more primal forms and visual expressions. I find that the circular format with its universal spiritual significance is a recurring image that finds its way into much of my work\, past and present\, 3D or 2D. It feels so intuitively whole\, calm and profound\, no matter what type of materials I may be working with at any given moment and I love the unpredictable things that happen even when using it repeatedly for a series of pieces. This body of encaustic work has been one of the most enjoyable I have worked on because I am so constantly surprised\, delighted and enlightened as I learn more about working with the wax and explore working with new natural found materials. At this point in my life\, having let go of many of my previous work obligations\, I am able to spend more time creating art that reflects my belief in expressing gratitude and wonder for the uniqueness of the naturally created world.”\n\n\nFind more information about the artist at www.patriciajenkswaxart.net

SUMMARY:intimate/infinite
DESCRIPTION:intimate/infinite\nWHEN: March 9th – April 6th\nOPENING RECEPTION: March 9th\, 2019;  7 – 11:30 PM\nWHERE: #LOCAL Gallery\n40 Cottage St\nEasthampton\, MA 01027 \nJoin us at #LOCAL for the Opening of “intimate/infinite”\, a thought-provoking and conversation-stimulating show. The exhibit\, curated by Amanda Barrow\, examines the nature of what is. While intimacy and infinity may at first seem to be opposites\, upon further reflection they can be seen to be deeply intertwined. This exhibition will feature paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed media\, all of which will explore nature and the abstract world from these perspectives. \nThe months of March and April are at the cusp of springtime\, and the intimate nature of humankind is kindled during the season. Infinite possibilities stretch ahead with summer\, fall\, and winter in an endless cycle. Intimate and infinite thoughts\, feelings\, and responses inspire us to move forward from the dark of winter into the light of spring. \nThe artists showing are: Scout Cuomo\, Lise Lemeland\, Kim Carlino\, Sharon Ligorner\, Maggie Nowinski\, and curator Amanda Barrow. Their work will feature paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed media\, all of which will explore nature and the abstract world. \nWe hope to expand your mind and open up deeper conversations about our reality in relationship to a larger purpose\, as well as the overlapping of realities. Allow the artwork to expand and open your mind to deeper conversations about what is\, what isn’t\, and what could be. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1194409764051297/

SUMMARY:Ultimate Safari in Southern Africa
DESCRIPTION:Ultimate Safari in Southern Africa: Photography by Vera Yanez\nWHEN: March 5th – March 27th\, 2019\nOPENING RECEPTION: March 9th\, 2019\nWHERE: ECA Gallery\, Old Town Hall\n42 MAIN STREET\nEASTHAMPTON\, MA 01027 \nUltimate Safari in Southern Africa: Photography by Vera Yanez will be on display March 5th – March 27th with an Art Walk Reception on March 9th in the ECA Gallery from 5-8pm. The exhibition consists of wildlife photography by Vera Yanez taken during a recent safari in Zimbabwe\, Botswana\, Zambia\, and South Africa. Yanez traveled to see animals in their natural habitat\, and would like to share the following artist statement with you: \n“I am in awe of the incredible diversity of life on this planet. There are millions of species of animals\, marine life\, plants\, flowers\, insects and invertebrates. Unfortunately\, we are ruining the earth with our disregard for the planet and its I creatures. In the future\, many species I hope to see won’t exist. \nAnimals of all types are my favorite subjects to observe and photograph. When an animal looks at me I try to understand what it is telling me and to convey that message in my photographs. I plan to keep traveling\, see as much of the world as possible\, and present its unique sights to the world through photos.”

SUMMARY:On the Beach - Eben Kling - Book Release
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling is a collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. The following is an excerpt from Eben Kling’s artist statement on On The Beach: \n“I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience. This exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. I would hope that providing a graphic space for the viewer to occupy while consuming the story and experiences contained in On the Beach will serve as a grounding\, and slightly less austere environment to live in story.\nThis show\, and this book serve as a testament to the whirring treachery\, and inversely\, the inviting prospect of change. “

SUMMARY:On the Beach by Eben Kling
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach by Eben Kling\nNew Work and Book Release!\nOpening Reception: April 13th from 5-8PM \nExciting new exhibit/installation at the Elusie Gallery\, part of the 5th Annual Easthampton Book Fest! \nA collection of work two years in making that highlights the tender nature of relationship between father and son is now ready for the public eye. \nEben Kling’s Artist Statement: \n“I began to work on this book about two years ago. Though my background is in illustration\, I never studied nor made comics. The stereotype of a young boy pouring over super hero comics on the living room floor\, being scolded for smuggling them into the classroom or hanging outside the comic book shop was simply not my reality as a young man. I did and still do however\, have a fondness for cartoons. Their narrative quality\, and how well engineered they are to potentially describe the unfortunate reality of violence.\nWhen my Father died\, I was an MFA candidate in the studio arts department at UMass Amherst. I tried desperately to make work about the experience during my career there\, implementing symbols like the cowboys of gun smoke\, my father’s landscape photography\, and his collection of “smut”\, left behind in his wake. I began experimenting with sculpture\, collage\, found objects\, film etc. These all ultimately failed\, serving as un-satisfying inquiries into my father’s life and death.\nI don’t recall how I came about to begin this project which led me to comics. I do remember however\, the relief that I began to experience after drawing the very first page. I realized in that moment that I didn’t need to work with the idea of my father\, but rather\, I needed to talk about him directly. The narrative richness inherent in the medium that is comics offered itself to me freely and has influenced my practice in substantial way.\nHowever\, I cannot forget my roots in the studio and “showing” comics provides an interesting conceptual conundrum. How and why would you take a medium that is a private\, personal form like a comic book and exhibit it in the public space that is the white cube gallery? This would seem to negate the emotional impact of the experience.\nThis exhibition in turn\, is an attempt to reconcile that tension. “

SUMMARY:night shift
DESCRIPTION:night shift:\na group show ft. recent UMass alumni\nWHEN: May 11th – May 24th\nOPENING RECEPTION: May 11th\, 5-8pm\nWHERE: MAP Space Gallery\, Eastworks\n116 PLEASANT STREET\nEASTHAMPTON\, MA 01027\nGALLERY HOURS: Mon & Weds // 12-5pm \n\nnight shift is a group exhibition featuring recent UMass alumni artists Charlotte Young\, Eva Lin Fahey\, Haley McDevitt\, Nuri On\, and Parker Phelps. This exhibition presents individual themes of identity across a wide range of mediums while navigating the turbulent transitions of postgraduate art making. \nCharlotte Young makes work that asks to be made\, allowing her body to act as a means for impulse and emotion to become tangible. To her\, it feels almost as though she herself (her conscious mind) is left out of the creative process (which is fine as far as she is concerned\, she believes that consciousness ought to be used a bit more sparingly than modern life often demands). Thus\, the work she makes is representative of her\, and her world- it is sensory input digested and regurgitated. Unburdened by the responsibility of representing this or that\, it is a multiplicity\, dipping its toes in many different pools of meaning\, none of which ultimately matter much at all (like most things\, though lots of things are nice and good). What does matter\, according to Charlotte (if you care to know)\, is nuance. \n\nEva Lin Fahey shares work centering around the process of creating her artist book\, Oceans\, mama. Showing poems\, paintings\, and drawings\, she shows the intimate collection of imagery and text that will ultimately be cropped and resized into a more formal book. As a Chinese adoptee\, Fahey draws from her experience of both longing to connect with her family ties and living a life far removed from her cultural/national origins. She uses her own identity as a mother to attempt to form a relationship with her unknown birth mother. Threads of longing and absence intersect with empathy and attachment to convey the enigmatic connection shared between mother and child. \nHaley McDevitt’s abstract paintings adorned with chalk pastel attempt to be present in a fleeting moment before you\, as does the artist. In the digital era\, it’s quite easy to slip into the imaginative purgatory of absent mindlessness clouded by the vastness of presence surpassing what’s actually in front of you. Mindfulness is something that the artist is attempting to bring closer to herself to become more familiar with herself as a real living individual\, and these paintings are a representation of the lack thereof – of how it feels and seems to be without the practice. \nNuri On’s work\, thank you\, come again\, revisits a previous photo documentary project they first started nine years ago. Prompted to come back to this project as his family prepares to move on from the family business they started when On was a child\, the photographs attempt to document the delicate balance of maintaining a semblance of family life with the work that provides their living. \nParker Phelps’ work in night shift revolves around portraits displayed through everyday objects transformed. Phelps incorporates themes of love for these specific portraits\, portraying a loved one encapsulated in a figmented moment\, greek myths\, and how a shared living space can become a symbol of commitment and compromise. In the work you will see clothing become ethereal\, cardboard boxes share their history\, and plastic bottles feel threatened. The work shows love in all it’s different languages\, sweet and sour. As figures spin\, video loops\, an hourglass drains into the air; love is about time\, mystery\, repetition\, transparency\, and beauty. \nCharlotte Young\nEva Lin Fahey – https://evalin.xyz/\nHaley McDevitt – www.haleymcdevitt.com\nNuri On\nParker Phelps – www.parkerphelps.com
