SUMMARY:ECA Gallery Presents: Kristi W. Colbert
DESCRIPTION:“From the Pieces” is a rotating exhibition of painted paper collage landscapes by Kristi W. Colbert\, a Leverett-based mixed media artist inspired by country life in Western Massachusetts\, as well as travels and wanderlust beyond. Composed of snippets from the recycle bin and bits of junk mail painted with gouache\, colored pencil\, and neocolor crayon\, Kristi’s work explores and evokes a palpable sense of place\, as transportive landscapes\, seascapes\, and cityscapes emerge from reclaimed paper fragments. As a self-identified perfectionist with the world closing in around her at the onset of the pandemic\, Kristi turned to collage as an experimental means of breaking out – outside the lines\, out of her perfectionism\, out of the confines of her home. Right away\, she fell in love with the freedom and duality of collage\, in both process and aesthetic. It is painterly and sculptural; deconstructive and reconstructive; realistic and abstract; intricate and unfussy. Her work is a record of places traveled\, and a map to what lies ahead. And\, situated in a time of such global heartbreak and destruction\, Kristi’s work is a meditative practice in\, and energetic manifestation of\, hope and repair – gluing together pieces of a broken world to remind us all of the beauty that surrounds us. DESCRIPTION:Ron Michaud writes about his work in Oxbow’s upcoming front gallery show: “As the title suggests\, the paintings in this exhibition are inspired by the place that is my home. I have lived and worked in Western Massachusetts nearly all my adult life. I know it well. It is truly home to me. So\, it seems perfectly natural that as a visual artist\, a painter\, I would take as a part of my identity\, the places that I see on a daily basis; places that I have been seeing and interacting with for many years; places that I have returned to often at different times of the day or the season; places that I have found particularly visually intriguing. My years in academia provided an opportunity to engage in inquiry\, exploration and research related to color and vision. My early work consisted of geometric abstract paintings and drawings directly related to those early inquiries. For some twenty or so years now\, I have taken this evolving fascination with color and vision and sought to answer many questions raised in my own mind about its role in the interpretation of the physical world I have come to know. This brought me to some of the places and images most closely associated with that sense of home. The paintings in this exhibition are examples of my continuing fascination with color and vision. The landscapes that I selected evoke for me a personal sense of “home” while at the same time provide a convenient vehicle for demonstrating some of the ways that color and vision help me to interpret\, negotiate and understand the physical world of my everyday life.” \nStop by Oxbow Gallery on December 6th from 4-7pm during the Easthampton City Art Walk to view the works of art and meet the artist!

DESCRIPTION:Making Meaning / Marking Time \nECA Invitational October 2025 \nCati Bestard and Michael Medeiros \nECA Gallery // October 4 – November 12\, 2015 \nIn our 20th anniversary year\, ECA is considering the passage of time and the moments that have marked our organizational impact\, shaping how we look forward and project our aspirations into the future for arts and culture in Easthampton. \nIn this spirit of marking time\, we look to the work of artists Cati Bestard and Michael Medeiros\, whose respective photographic and ceramic installation works animate this year’s ECA Gallery Invitational. Bestard’s photographs\, which take advantage of the medium’s visual capture of a moment in time\, show us something more partial and fractured. Having used outdated film from the precarious era of the financial crisis\, the photo processing is incomplete and the materiality of the prints are evasive of something purely representational. The photos embody the instability wrought with time\, layering eras marked with instability onto the likewise rocky present tense. In holding multiple temporalities\, they undermine a sense that a singular moment can stand alone\, and the common feeling that a photograph represents a scene exactly. \nMedeiros’ ceramic works and installation are inward-facing\, reflecting on the passing of the artist’s father—a watershed moment in life—and how the impacts of his father’s time in the Vietnam war inflected their relationship and its legacy. Ceramics\, as an intensive and process-oriented medium\, likewise holds time within it much like photography. Even the use of clay as material—old as dirt—carries durational meaning. It is marked by a handmade quality\, imprinted by an artist literally in the moment of its making. \nTime is elastic\, layered\, and punctuated by events both personal and shared. Bestard and Medeiros each approach these qualities through their respective media and embrace the multiplicity of temporalities embedded within them\, and invite asynchronous engagements that continue to develop. \nMaking Meaning / Marking Time will be accompanied by events featuring performance\, a time-based art form\, to continue to expand on and offer additional layers to the works of the exhibition.
