SUMMARY:Scenes in the Night (antique Japanese woodblocks)
DESCRIPTION:Above us\, stars. Beneath us\, constellations.\nFive billion miles away\, a galaxy dies\nlike a snowflake falling on water. Below us\,\nsome farmer\, feeling the chill of that distant death\,\nsnaps on his yard light\, drawing his sheds and barn\nback into the little system of his care.\nAll night\, the cities\, like shimmering novas\,\ntug with bright streets at lonely lights like\nhis.\nFrom “Flying at Night” by Ted Kooser \nMoonlit Sea Prints of Easthampton MA is presenting its latest exhibition\, Scenes in the Night\, showcasing the worlds of Hiroaki Takahashi Shotei\, Tsuchiya Yoshitoshi\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi\, Shoda Koho\, Arai Yoshimune\, Kawase Hasui\, Tsuchiya Koitsu\, Ohara Koson and Utagawa Hiroshige. \nWhile traditional Japanese art was created mainly for the ruling class\, the woodblock prints of the Edo period onward emerged as an art form that appealed to the common person and mass-produced for commercial consumption. Their topics\, rather than simply spiritual nature art\, dealt with the human experience (romance\, fantasies\, scandals\, tragedies\, eroticism… or even humble scenes of farmers\, fishermen\, etc.) The prints were expressive\, imaginative\, and explorative in their treatments with innovative artistic devices that evolved in a rapidly changing world. Perspective\, illumination\, silhouette\, reflections and atmosphere. Each image tells a story.

SUMMARY:CONTRASTING ART MEDIUMS 'KNIFE AND NEEDLE DRAWINGS' IN THE FRONT GALLERY
DESCRIPTION:Cut paper works by Margaret Humbert-Droz: The utility knife and its mini cousin\, the X-Acto swivel knife\, are the tools she slices into\, slash or cut shapes out of a variety of papers she then assembles into images. Some are collaged into figurative landscapes; others play with geometry or dimension. The ‘needle drawings’ constitute a trilogy of imaginary maps embroidered on linen. Work can be viewed through June 26

SUMMARY:Grace Kubilius // Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Grace Kubilius will have an open studio during Art Walk on Friday\, June 3 from 5-8pm in MAP Space in Eastworks. She’ll be showing current works in progress made during her Art Workspace Easthampton (AWE) studio residency through Easthampton City Arts. \nGrace reflects: \n“During my studio residency at ECA’s Art Workspace Easthampton (AWE)\, I plan to utilize the time and space to create a series of textile focused sculptures and wearable objects. My work is situated in the questioning of gender construction\, performing identity\, and the body. Material investigation/ innovation is central to my practice–I choose material (based on cultural and narrative associations) that has a gendered or bodily potency. \nI am especially interested in readily available material like makeup\, latex\, and flowers. What objects already exist and how have they shaped my understanding of my body or gender identity? Currently\, I consider points of connection\, such as tethering\, piercing\, zip tying\, and joining materials\, as crucial punctuations of my visual vocabulary\, that I am excited to develop further. \nThrough the ECA residency program\, I hope to connect with others (communities and individuals) surrounding topics intrinsic to my work. As our understanding of gendered existence and identity is continually being redefined\, I aim to make space for honest conversation\, questioning\, and compassion. I look forward to challenging my ideas\, learning from others\, and allowing for vulnerability and evolution within my work.”

SUMMARY:Easthampton Clay Gallery: Featured Artist Juli Kirk
DESCRIPTION:Easthampton Clay is a new and growing ceramics community in western Massachusetts with a large\, well-equipped studio space that is shared by a diverse group of ceramic artists and potters. Join us as we open the doors of our gallery space for an opening reception celebrating the work of our featured artist\, Juli Kirk. You’ll get an opportunity to talk with Juli about their work and get a free Easthampton Clay magnet. \nHeres what Juli has to say:\nI have spent the majority of my artistic career as an oil painter. When EHC opened 3 1/2 years ago I was one of its earliest members. I immediately got sucked into the joy of pot making. As I experimented\, I became increasingly bewildered and excited by the endless possibilities of this new medium. My most recent experiments are adventuring into figurative sculpture. I hope this is just the beginning of a long ceramic journey.

SUMMARY:How Do Your People Call Earth? - JuPong Lin
DESCRIPTION:This community-engaged performance was first initiated in 2016 by JuPong Lin with\nNicole Oxendine\, in response to the removal of many “nature” words from the Oxford\nJunior Dictionary. Words that replaced the removed words included; blog\, broadband\,\nchatroom\, celebrity\, voicemail. \nThis project resists the values expressed in the decision to replace names of animal and\nplant beings with “technological” words. We honor the language and names of our\nanimal\, plant and fungal kin and will speak and write their names in all the many\nlanguages spoken in every part of the Earth. \nThis community-engaged project offers a way for Earthbeing lovers to insist on the vital\nneed to keep alive the names by which we call Earth\, Wind\, Water\, Sun & Fire\, and all\nthe many diverse beings who live and move with each other in relationship with our\nBeloved Earth. We create a ceremonial space to recover the “lost words” by which we\ncall our earth and our nonhuman kin. \nYou can contribute to the project with paperfolds of canoes\, cranes or horseshoe crabs\nand/or responding to the poetrywriting prompts below. Throughout the month of June\nyou can deliver these contributions in-person to CitySpace\, 43 Main Street\,\nEasthampton\, MA 01027. There are pins in a shell on the floor to attach your piece to\nthe curtain.
