JRM received his B.A. at California State University, San Marcos in their Literature and Writing department. As a writer, his plays have been featured in festivals across the country. He participated as a playwright in Creative Arts Enterprise's fourth annual Lavender Footlights festival in Miami, and in October 2006, he wrote for Tucson Arizona’s inaugural LGBT new plays festival First Words: Relativity, sponsored by the Arizona chapters of Wingspan, and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. In 2008 he completed graduate studies in the University of California, Santa Barbara's department of Theatre and Dance with an emphasis in Playwriting and Chicano Studies.
