Carol Abbe Smith
Singing brings me great joy. I Love getting together with a group of musicians and making music. My love of Jazz is rooted in being able to improvise. I like nothing better than calling a tune with a group of experienced Jazz musicians and letting the music take us on a journey without any pre planning. To me there is no greater an experience.
I have been singing most of my life but the last 15 years I have been performing as a Jazz vocalist. I got my start performing at the former Caffeine's in Springfield. Since than I have perfomed with some of the Valley's best Jazz musicians. At present I mainly work with my own group the Carol Abbe Smith Ensemble, and with the newly formed Valley Jazz Divas which consists of myself, Jill Connolly, and Barbara Weene. I have produced one cd "Close your eyes" with my own group as well as an EP with the Valley Jazz Divas. I sing Jazz standards as well as many bebop tunes. I love to scat. Aside from working as a singer I am also on the Board of PACE as well as the Easthampton Cultural Council.IN my spare time I work full time as a real estate agent for Century 21 in Easthampton.
My first professional gig was working with a group of top area musicians at Caffeine's and getting paid to do it. Another great experience was sitting in with onetime local pianist Tom Mcclung in a smokey Paris club.Last winter I started a twice monthly Jazz jam at PACE, and it has been very satisfying to see local musicians, pro and amateur make music together. At the moment I am thrilled about working with 2 great local singers, Jill Connolly and Barbara Weene in the Valley Jazz Divas.
