MONSTER ARTS PROJECT RETURNS

Professor S.N.Tomlinson

The Monster Arts Project will return to Eastworks’ Mill Arts Project (MAP) space from October 8 - 29, 2016. From illustrations to intricate sculpture, eighteen talented artists will re-imagine the creatures that have resided in their minds since childhood.

“Imaginary creatures are something as old as art itself and creating them as children helps fuel our imagination. I want to show how that imagination continues into adulthood,” said Sloan Tomlinson, project curator and exhibitor.

The gallery space will be transformed into the 1920s-style salon of fictional character S.N. Tomlinson, a professor of Monsterology at the Monsterological Institute of the Outer Hebrides. The adventurer-esque lounge, filled with artwork by Scout Cuomo, Rob Kimmel, Zooguu and 15 other artists, will provide a visually stimulating and immersive experience for guests. The show, now in its second year, will host events throughout the month:
  • Saturday, October 8 - Opening reception from 5 - 8 p.m. in conjunction with Art Walk Easthampton. Visitors can enjoy live music from Butterfly Swing, a local five-piece jazz band, and catering by Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack.
  • Saturday, October 15 - Children’s monster-themed shadow puppet show, performed by Cactushead puppets, from 3 - 4 p.m.
  • Friday, October 21 - Monster-themed book reading with acclaimed local author Jane Yolen from 4 - 5 p.m., with chances to win author-autographed books.
  • Saturday, October 22 - Kids monster-building craft workshop on from 4 - 5 p.m. with instructors from Knack, the Art of Clever Reuse.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. The MAP gallery is located on the first floor of the Eastworks Building, at 116 Pleasant Street in Easthampton. Gallery hours will be Thursdays from noon - 5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from noon - 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. For more information, including a full list of artists and up-to-the-minute announcements, please visit facebook.com/MonsterArtsProject.
